CMI Tessellate - (S.T.E.M.S) Scholastic Test of Excellence in Mathematical Sciences

Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), a premiere center for research and education in Mathematical Sciences, is organizing a nationwide (India) Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science Contest, the S.T.E.M.S, as a part of the college fest Tessellate.

The Olympiads will be held in the beginning of January. Registrations are open: Link

By participating in S.T.E.M.S, you get to show off your Mathematics/Physics/Computer Science skills at a national level. And have the chance to attend a Science Camp at CMI, where you'd meet some of the finest mathematicians and physicists in the country, not to mention the gifts.

The camp will feature some of the best Mathematicians, Physicists and Computer Scientists from some of the best research institutes in India, like CMI, ISI Bangalore, IMSc, IISc and the IIT's, etc. (The complete list of speakers shall be uploaded soon.) CMI shall provide travel fare, food and accomodation for the selected participants. Students from all age groups will have fair representation. It promises to be a great opportunity for the students to interact with CMI-ites and get an insight about college mathematics and college life(probably in that order, though). The camp shall also feature student talks from students of the aforementioned institutes. They shall also receive certificates signed by some of the best mathematicians of the country, books and other prizes. The top 100 participants shall receive certificates of participation.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Shall we submit the solutions of both subjective and MCQ questions or the solutions of subjective questions only?

Shourjo Chakraborty - 3 years, 6 months ago

You just have to produce the correct response for the MCQ problems, and write a detailed solution for the subjective problems.

When will the results of stems be announced and where should we check them?

Shourjo Chakraborty - 3 years, 5 months ago

They should be announced by the end of this month. If you are selected, you will be contacted via email. Also keep an eye on Tessellate's Facebook Page

Will not the answer to the mcq no.10(school category) be 46. I have done it in the following way. For first digit of "a" or "b" we have 8 choices, for second digit 2 choices, third is 0(only one choice) ,fourth digit has 3 choices. So total possible cases are 48 out of which ''a'' and '''b'' are becoming 0 two times and these must be eliminated(because they are natural numbers). So, required cases are 46. Please let me know where I am making an error.

the answer to is 48

Arun Palaniappan - 3 years, 4 months ago

This is what the Math Team said:

It's 48 of a and b are allowed to be 0

We have given points for 46 too

Thank you so much, please keep adding more to the list! Also, can you tell me whether the paper of class 10th, 11th and 12th will be the same? If so, will the cutoff lists be different? Can you share some data about past year cutoffs?

Kushal Thaman - 2 years, 8 months ago

@Kushal Thaman No, unfortunately I do not have data about last year's cutoff. However, the organizers have told me that they will try to have an equal representation across ages in the camp.

This year's wiki has a clearer break down of these facts.

Agnishom Chattopadhyay - 2 years, 8 months ago

@Agnishom Chattopadhyay Thanks. Will the level of difficulty of 11th-12th category and 10th-and-below category be same? By "equal representation across ages", do you mean that 50 students will be selected from each category, or a total of 50 students will be invited to the camp from all categories? The wiki says: A total of candidates with exceptional performance among all the examinees will be chosen for the camp at Chennai Mathematical Institute in February. Can you please elaborate?

Kushal Thaman - 2 years, 8 months ago

@Kushal Thaman The question papers for all the sections listed in the S.T.E.M.S. wiki will be different since there are differences in the syllabi of all these categories. Since the papers will be based on different topics, you cannot really compare the difficulty level. If you wish to get an overview of the exam, we suggest you try the practice problems from S.T.E.M.S. 2018.

As the wiki states, a total of 50 students will be selected for the camp. This is inclusive of all categories, so we do not mean 50 students per category. We will upload a list of students selected for the camp from each category when the results will be declared.

Aditya Raut - 2 years, 8 months ago

@Aditya Raut @Agnishom Chattopadhyay Will the selection of 50 students be kept uniform? Otherwise all those from the senior categories would have more probability of selection. Also, in the syllabi section, there were only two parts, School, and College. Does that mean that the syllabus of both the categories (10th and below, and 11th-12th) be same? Or will the syllabus of 10th and below be different?

Kushal Thaman - 2 years, 8 months ago

@Kushal Thaman You have perhaps been reading the old wiki for S.T.E.M.S. 2018. Please go to www.brilliant.org/STEMS for this year's information. The syllabus has been divided into 3 sections and they have been stated specifically in exam pattern section. We do not state 'School' or 'College', but specifically the sections this year.

Aditya Raut - 2 years, 8 months ago

@Aditya Raut I read this wiki only- so the syllabus for 10th, 11th and 12th is the same.

Kushal Thaman - 2 years, 8 months ago

@Aditya Raut Are more problem sets/sample papers for Physics section A coming?
