Cody Song's Message board

Hi, I am Cody Song from United States, I am 17 years old and I am a Year 11 student in a non-IB school.

I learn most of my math from online sources and I don't really learn any maths at school (My class is still learning stuff like the separable differential equations and annihilators =.=).

Feel free to ask me any questions about me!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

A couple of questions. I hope you'll take some time to answer them.

  1. When did you first get interested in math? When did you start learning math outside of your curriculum?

  2. Who or what inspired you to start Proofathon?

  3. What kind of music do you like?

  4. Who is Oscar Harmon?

  5. You said you learn math from online sources. Name a few of them.

  6. What kind of books do you read?

  1. Freshman year, I liked precalc so I joined Mu Alpha Theta. In Florida, they hold Mu Alpha Theta competitions, so that really fine-tuned my precalc skills. Only last year did I find out about Olympiad (when someone surprised me by saying, "Hey, let's skip first period and take the AMC.")

  2. It was mostly due to the fact that I wanted to do an online proof-based Olympiad.

  3. I really like funk and jazz, but then with a punk-rock based twist. I love great vocals. For example, my favorite bands are Hiromi Uehara, Incubus, Stone Temple Pilots, Muse, Pink Floyd, and An Endless Sporadic. I also compose, but that is to be released at a later time...

  4. Oh dear. On Brilliant, I failed in the level-placement test, so I had to make a new account. It was shameful!

  5. Brilliant.org, Mathematical Olympiad Treasures. Also, there's a secretly awesome site called famat.org, don't tell anybody!

  6. sparknotes.com

  1. That actually gives me hope. You really got into the IMO team with only a year's training. That means I still have a shot!

  2. Awesome.

  3. Cool.

  4. That actually raises more questions than it answers. Would you mind if I ask you more questions on this? And if my memory serves me right, Oscar Harmon was working on the Collatz conjecture with something with binary strings. How did that turn out?

  5. Mathematical Olympiad Treasures is a great book!

  6. I'll be sure to check it out.

Thank you for answering!

@Mursalin Habib Oscar = me

Cody Johnson - 7 years, 1 month ago

@Cody Johnson I knew that.

My questions are:

What made you think of Oscar Harmon as your pseudonym(?) ?

Why did Oscar write sentences like "Me and my friend Cody..."?

How many accounts did Oscar have? One of them is merged with your current account. But there is another one that opened this discussion.

Okay, I can't believe that I'm discussing about something as pointless as this. But then again, you did say "ask me about anything".

Why is your name on Brilliant Cody Johnson?

Finn Hulse - 7 years, 1 month ago

I got jealous of Goh Pi Han and Yeoh Zi Song for having their last name first and having 3 names rather than 2. Hence, Johnson Cody Song.

Cody Johnson - 7 years, 1 month ago

I don't understand, are you saying Pi Han Goh's real name is Goh Pi Han? What is your legit real name?

Finn Hulse - 7 years, 1 month ago

@Finn Hulse In many (if not all) Eastern cultures/countries, people address others saying their last name first. I'll give an example using Chinese (sorry there's no accents, my keyboard can't do that)

Suppose an adult male's last name is Wang (王). In the US, he would be called "Mr. Wang." The word in Chinese for Mr. is xiansheng (先生). But "Mr. Wang" in Chinese isn't xiansheng wang (先生王), despite the fact that this literally translates to "Mr. Wang." The correct way to say it is wang xiansheng (王先生). This literally translates to "Wang Mr." The same thing happens with first names as it does with titles.

I'm pretty sure I got this right, although my Chinese class is more vocabulary oriented than conversationally oriented.

Tan Li Xuan - 7 years, 1 month ago

@Tan Li Xuan I take Chinese at my school. I'm in my second year.

Trevor B. - 7 years, 1 month ago

@Trevor B. There's a Chinese class in a US school? Seems sort of weird....

Tan Li Xuan - 7 years, 1 month ago

@Tan Li Xuan It's a private school. It offers Chinese, Spanish, and French, so I took Chinese to be able to communicate with the largest number of people. Especially when China's economy and population of >1.5 billion people fully opens up to the world, employers and lots of others will be looking for people who are able to speak to them.
