This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Photo- electric effect is the phenomenon of certain metals . We know that metallic atoms like to lose electrons so that they achieve stability because they are closer to having their octet complete .So the atoms after losing electrons turn into cations and get stable . Also during photo-electric effect, the free electrons from the metal surface are emitted . This means that the metallic atoms have already lost their electrons and when light is incident on the metal surface those free electrons gets emitted .

A photon with the specific discrete energy level required by the atom to change the valence electron's state to a higher state, will change the orbital of that electron. In the case of the photoelectric effect, the electron's energy level will change to the infinitesimally larger energy level than the maximum possible energy level of that atom (maximum orbital); hence emitting the electron from the atom. Once the atom has lost this electron, it simply becomes ionized and is in need of another electron. This electron could be a free electron or it could be a valence electron from another atom in which they may form a bond. Though in the case of a larger chunk of metal; this is generally disregarded.
