Contests on Brilliant.org ?

Hello everyone !

I've spent a significant amount of time on Competitive Programming websites like Codeforces, and I sometimes solve problems on MathMash, which holds regular math competitions. I think Brilliant.org has a much diverse community than both the sites, and its possible to organize much diverse contests as compared to both the sites. We can have physics contests, biology contests, and much more ! We can also organise a mashup contest, consisting of problems from different fields mixed together. I think this will be a great idea which can be implemented.

I am aware of the cons too. Such a move can simply destroy the reputation of Brilliant.org as a great website for learning, and can become a place of cut-throat competition between problem solvers. This can easily undermine the fun of learning and solving problems for beginners, who will be demoralized by the top participants. However, on the flip side, such an assessment will give you a realistic idea of where you stand. Currently, by selectively solving problems, we can get a good rating on Brilliant.org. I'm myself guilty of having done so.

Guys, what are your opinions ?

  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

There have been innumerable contests in Brilliant in the past, including Mechanics contests, JEE Maths contests and Integration contests. They have always been a great learning experience.

@Mohit Kumar Basak – Not too recently, you are right. All the active members of Brilliant are quite inactive nowadays.
