Why do we get level pending on our problem? Also on which basis we are awarded discount on brilliant?

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

When you first post a problem and give it an initial seed level, we would say that it is "level pending" and it's worth 100 points to whoever solves it. Over time, the community works on the problem and inputs their answers. After enough people have worked on it, and we have become more confident that the rating is accurate, we will declare the level of the problem.

(There is no hard and fast rule about the number of people that need to work on it. For example, if you post a Level 1 problem, and we've only had 100 Level 5's who all solved it correctly, we might not have enough information to conclude that the problem is indeed level 1.)

You can help us get your problem rated by
1. Publishing it with a seeded level (It takes moderators a few days to give seed levels to the popular and interesting problems)
2. Making the problem engaging for others to work on
3. Sharing a solution which shows off the underlying mathematics in a clear manner
