Dispersion and Recombination

I am preparing for my science exam and here; we learnt in physics that a glass prism disperses white light into 7 constituent colours and for recombination of those 7 colours into white light we need to arrange an inverted prism such that its refracting surfaces are parallel to those of the first one. Fair and Square.

My doubt is since after emerging out from the first one; since all rays dont travel parallel to each other and hence; with distance their differences will be more significant; so; is it true that for perfect recombination we need to place the inverted prism close to the first one. So, does distance between prisms affect the process of recombination?

And what about rectangular glass slabs; I know that their parallel faces cancel out the dispersion but I think all 7 colours must have different lateral displacements and hence; the emergent ray may not be r.ecombined? Is this true?

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

I think no, the prisms don't need to be attached in order for recombination to occur. You can search this in youtube ,there are some cool videos regarding it.

I think you are in 10(I am too, I have my Science paper a bit latter)

Yes, I am in 10. And I think my question should have been framed like does distance between prisms affect the process of recombination?
