Electricity, Magnetism and Madness

I am extremely bad at electricity , magnetism and the related stuff. I would greatly appreciate If someone could suggest resources for solving complex equivalent/effective resistance problems and also some problems which involve magnetic effect of current like this one- click here..... The problem is back at school we're encouraged to do only simple problems and if we come up with tougher ones we're discouraged from doing them. But ofcourse only these kinds of problems come-up in olympiads... so i would kindly request y'all to suggest webpages/resources/books to hone my skills on these topics.... Thanks PLEASE SUGGEST USEFUL WEBSITES/BOOKS WHICH ARE NON-CALCULUS BASED PREFERABLY....ITS FINE IF THEY'RE CALCULUS BASED TOO. PLEASE SUGGEST WEBSITES WHICH ARE A SOURCE OF GOOD MATERIAL RELATING TO THIS TOPIC

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Click here This is seriously nice! And you could use problem sets from the scholar version of the same: clik here. Using halliday resnick walker's 8th edition of Fundamentals of physics as a simultaneous read might also work well! Luck!

Thanks. :)... But that's too advanced for a person who has just turned 14. Maybe once I complete calculus , I could take to them. But those were awesome citations

With all these prodigies on this site, it's quite challenging for a late-starter like myself to give sane answers! But yeah, they are too awesome! :P And good luck! Always experiment with electricity and magnetism to get them embedded into your brains! :)

I didnt quite understand your reply

Krishna Ar - 7 years, 1 month ago

Taking your age into consideration I think, you can solve such examples logically. There is no need to learn the theoretical part right now. Once you are 17, you will thoroughly understand this topic.

If you are quite passionate about physics, you can refer to videos on Youtube. When I was your age I found this book Chemical Chaos quite interesting. The same publication have also published a book on physics (I don't have its name right now but will provide as soon as possible).

Pinak Wadikar - 7 years, 1 month ago

I like your curiosity :)

Pinak Wadikar - 7 years, 1 month ago

I'm sorry, but definitely there is the need to learn them theoretically. Logically I'm sure one can't solve an unbalanced Wheatstone bridge circuit. Maybe, what you mean is that I need to understand it using calculus ( which is the way to learn physics ), if that's what you mean.... then you're right. But the drawback in CBS curriculum is that concepts are introduced with very shallow depth in early stages and later at great depths...which is disappointing.. to give an example, in 11th std, without even introducing calculus , equations of motion are derived using integral calculus... hope you get me

Krishna Ar - 7 years, 1 month ago

I understand what you want to say there. I personally feel that you should strengthen your base right now. You should thoroughly understand how different things depend on each other. Learning Biot Savart's law or Gauss law right now might overburden you. Also as mentioned, you do not have a good support from your tutors. A topic like Electricity and magnetism needs deep understanding and a good introduction to the topic might help. However you may take the advice you find right.

Your point about the CBS curriculum: If you join a good IIT coaching institute then the tutors there will help you to understand every topic. I too could not solve such problems at your age (in fact till 10th). Later, with the support of my institute I learnt this art of problem solving. Also you do not have to bother about 11th std when you are preparing for IIT. So do not worry.

Pinak Wadikar - 7 years, 1 month ago

@Pinak Wadikar I must say, your research on the Physics books available is quite extensive! (Keep up the good work!) They do depend a lot on Calculus. Therefore I will not refer any of these books right now.

Pinak Wadikar - 7 years, 1 month ago

@Pinak Wadikar Unfortunately, I don't attend any coaching institute. And I don't rather consider it a drawback as I 've been able to prove myself without them. Currently I'm working on pre-calculus post which hopefully I could take up calculus and then magically (:P) bridge the gap in physics. BTW, which coaching class do you attend?

Krishna Ar - 7 years, 1 month ago

@Krishna Ar, you are absolutely correct. I refer these books - Principles of Physics (Halliday-Resnick) & Concepts of Physics (H.C. Verma). You can google them.

@Satvik Golechha Seriously? ;) Why? Care to elaborate?

Krishna Ar - 7 years, 1 month ago

@Ameya Salankar For understanding these books, a deep knowledge of calculus is required. So did u know calculus before using them? WHEN DID U START USING THEM? WHEN DID U LEARN CALCULUS?

Krishna Ar - 7 years, 1 month ago

@Krishna Ar @Krishna Ar, well, deep is not the right word. In H.C. Verma, he gives a chapter (Ch.2 Physics & Mathematics) on vectors & calculus & he says this is the only knowledge you require. He gives just the transformation formulae. Try to study those with full understanding & that should be fine.

I started using those at 15. I was provoked when I saw the proforma for NSEA & NSEP. So, I made it a point to appear next year with full preparation. (By the way, I appeared in 10th10^{th} std. too but I scored really low).

Ameya Salankar - 7 years, 1 month ago

@Ameya Salankar So you didn't learn calculus separately? (just asking.....)

Krishna Ar - 7 years, 1 month ago

@Ameya Salankar OKay...I didnt really get what you said but I assume that you didnt learn calculus separately ( from books other than HCV). If thats true, then you're amazing for the simple reason you're a level 4 in it without proper practice..:)

Krishna Ar - 7 years ago

@Krishna Ar @Krishna Ar yeah. Even I am amazed at myself (your assumption is perfectly true)!

Ameya Salankar - 7 years ago

@Ameya Salankar Hi! @Ameya Salankar - Is H.C.Verma volume two ( i think, its the one containing E-M stuff) easy to understand? Could I get to it without doing volume 1 fully/ calculus? Your response would be appreciated.

Krishna Ar - 7 years ago

@Krishna Ar Well, I would go against the idea @Krishna Ar. Even I had trouble understanding it. That's why. I am still level 1 in E & M. My Luck. Okay, you can still do it if you have a person with you who is an expert. But basic calculus is really necessary, I tell you.

Ameya Salankar - 7 years ago

@Ameya Salankar Hmmm... yes. E&M is quite abstract. Perhaps I must do calculus very soon, else I would land myself in a pool of hot water :P

actually, i am in rotary BTW, in the brackets, I have written some very notable points and even criticized the schools.....

I also want to learn a lot and finding nothing helpful as far as em is concerned.. Also, the quote is a little bit too common and i have become obsessed with it. hey, do you take tuition or some coaching centers ?

@Kartik Sharma Which bracket are you talking about? No, I dont attend any coaching, what about you?

Krishna Ar - 7 years, 1 month ago

@Krishna Ar (or if the school can) This was sarcastic as it was attacking the schools because I know that schools never explain what we want. I can understand that this bracket meant to say something else but it is reflecting a little bit different.

(ur trademark)BTW, I also don't attend coaching and a little bit confused about it.
