Emotions and Youth

Why is it that when you're a teenager, your emotions are seemingly invalid to adults? Are we lesser beings than you, simply because we're in our pubescent years?

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Every one in his or her life has gone through the teenager's stage. We all are aware of this term. According to me at this stage of life, a teenager faces lot of distractions and influences. If not handled carefully he or she can really become annoying. Its a stage totally of confusion and this stage also helps in building up emotions. So its nothing like that our emotions are seemingly invalid to adults, its only that they have to understand us.

Emily, you are certainly not a lesser human being for happening to be a teenager. That said, most adults who survived being a teenager do not miss it at all, and remember it as a dark era that only time cured.

Why is it that when you're a teenager, your emotions are seemingly invalid to adults?

I think it is a good question, and that most people who have lived long enough to be a teenager have had that thought before. I don't have a good answer to why adults condescend to teenagers.
