Extend Brilliant to Non-connected/sometimes connected students

Hi, Listened to Chamath in Ottawa yesterday. Learned about Brilliant. How can we make Brilliant available to deserving students who 1) may not have internet access easily available (only sometimes) 2) Not at all. I was born in Sri Lanka and grew up in Nigeria and fortunately I had parents who were both maths and physics teachers. Brilliant would work great for deserving students in Nigeria but I still cannot figure out how you/we will overcome the internet access problem. /Akilan

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Good idea:-) May be we would now have an issue of figuring out how to get these books to these folks. However, it is an easier problem to solve than installing optical fibre cables or wireless networks to enable internet access in these areas.

It can't be very difficult for the Brilliant staff to add the possibility to export a certain set of problems from the techniques trainer to pdf, for printing. I'm not sure about whether the solutions should be added: users with internet access could use those to cheat.

Exactly.....u are correct...!!!

all the new users will have a Great Probability of Cheating..... am I sure brilliant cant take that step!

True but I would not worry about the cheating. They'd only be cheating themselves. Ultimately, if any persons want to use these Brilliant ratings, the persons would have to prove it in an environment where they cannot cheat. So who are they cheating? For example, a university will not rely only on the Brilliant points system. They'd invite someone to prove their capability in a supervised environment, right? Likewise, potential employers or scholarship agencies,...

@Akilan Tiburtius You're right. What Brilliant could do, is letting anyone download the pdf, but after you did that, you're not allowed to submit answers anymore.

Well..Deserving students fall into two categories--those who know their potential and those who do not. The ones who do will be able to reach Brilliant sooner or later--They know that they have the talent and will go to the ends of the earth to get access to Brilliant. The one's who don't know their full potential, though, are stuck in a deadlock. Those are the students that need to be helped

By the way, I think Brilliant is brilliant! :-) It is about time we took away this accident of birth variables and gave people who have certain abilities a reasonable chance to do well.

I don't see why not. Screen size may be an issue for some of the problems. However, if a region does not have internet access through ISPs, it is highly likely that it may not have a wireless network in place.

Akilan Tiburtius - 7 years, 12 months ago

What might be helpful is to have a Brilliant.org storefront that allows us brilliant users to congregate and solve problems with others in the same space. Create a space, like a coffee shop with a ton of whiteboard markers and whiteboards, with laptops to access Brilliant.org to solve these problems with physical witnesses. Maybe even selling franchises to people willing to run such institutions.

I hope... Find a Friend with Internet access.....or demand your Country Govt. ... Why becoz... if brilliant allow users to Print technique trainer then .... Any new User who could get a copy having an Internet access can Easily cheat online.... i think u know ...Using multiple Account itself is crime on Brilliant!..

I suggest you to inform this to best Editor or somehow..... u can develop Internet access as it is must in this World at Present..... Govt must think of this..........
