[Feature Request] Project section

Brilliant is the place of many extraordinary people. Almost, all the users of Brilliant are the ones who are well known in their school, college for their high intellect and extraordinary skills in Science, Maths, etc. They have the potential to change the world and here on Brilliant they are all at the same place. So, I thought there are quite a many things we can learn from each other and help each other to build something great. That's the reason I created this Discussion. The motive is to suggest something through which it can be achieved. There are many idea though which this can be done. The following is the one, I came up with:

Wouldn't it be great if there were a section on projects in which projects on various things led by individuals would be built. Others who are interested can join and work with the leader in the project. The rules would be something like this:

Anyone can start building a project.
Others who are interested can join him in the project and give suggesting or help to the one who is leading the project on anything.
The one making the project would have the privilege to accept or deny anyone who want to join the project.

This is just an example. I think there are many other great ideas like this. I request Brilliant to do something like this.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.

Hi Lokesh,

We are thrilled that you want a place on Brilliant where you can pursue side projects with people from around the world. From what you describe it sounds like the feature you are requesting would be the ability for members to formed closed discussion groups, where they could collaborate on a project. Additionally it sounds like you would like the ability to have a page where all people who are working on projects list what they are working on, so strangers can discover it and offer to help and join their discussion group.

Have I understood what you are imagining correctly?

Okay cool. We'll put more thought into what kind of design would allow people to efficiently find collaborators and start projects.

What kind of projects do you think we can have?

Project on anything ranging from a mathematical differential equation solution to a sophisticated gadget development.

It is pretty interesting that Trevor B found and reshared this discussion.

I think that this is still a great idea. Is there a way that we can test it out now without building any new features? Right now, it seems that Christopher Boo is doing something like this with chemistry.

I was just browsing some of my followers and liked the idea. Personally, I think a good place to test (or maybe even implement) is with Google Groups. The features Lokesh describes are easily achievable through Google Groups.

If there was anything that needed to be built, then I would probably say that it would be another link on the profile page under "Activity," "Feed," "Followers," etc. labeled "Projects" that would give a page where people could input the name of the project, a description (or link to a relevant discussion page), and a link. The leader of the project could set up a Google Group and work from that.

As it stands right now, something you can do is make a discussion with a Google Group, but it would be really cool if you could see the projects someone is working on simply by going to their profile page.

Downside: not everyone has a Google+ account, but if I remember correctly from my days back at Sporcle (which had a forum called Sporcle University), there were users on the forum that didn't have a Google+ account, so I'm not so sure.

You can create "prompts" on your profile titled "Projects I'm Working On" with links to each Google Group project...

I think you can use Google Groups without a G+ account, right?

@Silas Hundt – Ah, yes, that's probably a better way to do it.

I'm not sure, but I think you can use Google Groups without a Google+ account, but I've had a Google+ account since I started using Google Groups for things.

@Trevor B. – This is a good plan. We need a way to let people browse all the projects that people are working on on Brilliant though... Maybe when you add one, you make a note with the tag #PublicProjects, and people can look at the tags.
