This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

I'm not saying Brilliant will provide the printouts,I am just asking brilliant to provide the pdf and we will print it for ourselves. Well consider a situation,it's 2 am,my mother is sleeping at the room where my pc is,i want to try out some problems, what do i do? i can even carry the printed problems wherever i go even if there's no internet connection there. And yes atleast for me maths on paper is more enjoyable. :)

Certainly you can print out the page that the problem is on. So now I'm slightly confused about what you would like.

Each page has one problem,I'd like a document (pdf preferably) containing all the problem of the weeks in one or two page(s).

Soham Chanda - 8 years, 4 months ago

You can just create a page where all the 8 problems are there and people can just print it out.

They listened to this suggestion! Now the problems are printable. Thanks!

Yes, i'd also like this feature. I write down all the problems which I think will require some thinking and hardwork, and take the sheet to school. There is a lot of free time at school (there is hardly any teaching - my school sucks, though its reputed to be one of the best), and most of the problems I do are done at school. At times it takes upto 45 min to write them all. Getting pdfs will save a lot of time.

Most of schools in India are in the same condition.I really get hurt to see the poor condition of extracurricular maths.I really want to open a maths club in my locality,...

I'm not sure why printing out the problems yourself from the web page is not possible for you. If the problem is that you have access to a printer (maybe at school) but not the web at the same time, you can install something that makes your browser able to print a page to a pdf file. There are also ways to make several pages into one, if you'd rather have one page than twenty. (But I usually need the blank space to write on.)

err.. taking 1 printout of all questions is more practical that taking ~20 printouts and why waste space when we only require the one or 2 sentences?

Harshit Kapur - 8 years, 4 months ago

The weekly problem sets are not completely identical for everyone. We will never be providing printouts of the problems.

I honestly do not see what the issue with having to turn your PC on is, unless you have limited internet / electricity access. The whole purpose of being on the internet is to provide you with the accessibility, in a cost-effective manner, regardless of your physical location. If you expect to be snail mailed the problems weekly, that will take forever to arrive, and be way to costly for us to even consider the option.

What about say making it that each week some program compiles in a latex pdf the problems for you so that they can print it out? A lot of people prefer to do problems on paper rather than seeing them on a screen while doing them.

There are a variety of issues with compiling a pdf. We run several kinds of code, which do not necessarily work well with a Latex compiler. For example, markdown doesn't react well with Latex.

Also, we're looking at the possibility of having (almost) distinct sets of problems for students. If we were to do so, then we'd need to store way too much pdf's to be able to provide that. It might be reasonable to store 1 pdf per question, but even that will be tricky.
