Featured Scientist - Isaac Newton

If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants

Yes, Sir Newton this time!

Sir Isaac Newton, (4 Jan 1643 - 31 March 1737) was an English Physicist and Mathematician, and arguably the greatest scientist who has ever lived. He is my favorite scientist and role model!

Why is Newton so famous?

  • He found the Universal Law of Gravitation.
  • He created a whole new branch of mathematics, just to solve a physics problem! (The path of heavenly bodies under the influence of gravity)
  • He revolutionized mathematics.
  • He was the founder of one of the Brilliant's Physics topics, Classical Mechanics.

What are some cool facts of about Newton?

  • He was unsocial and an introvert.
  • This great problem solver couldn't once understand trigonometry, which led his interest to Euclid's Elements.
  • He created Calculus at the rate people study it!
  • He possessed extraordinary mathematical abilities right from his childhood.
  • He was and remains the youngest Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge.
  • He was one of the greatest enemies of Robert Hooke, who's even my personal enemy.

And interestingly, he believed in God, but rejected the concept of Trinity.

That was all about Newton. Hope you people enjoy, thanks a lot!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

My enemy too for that very reason.

Biology was studied way before cells were discovered.

But studied extensively after this discovery. Even Oceanology exists.

Great post! I wish I had seen this before.

And interestingly, he believed in God, but rejected the concept of Trinity.

What is the concept of Trinity?

It is perhaps something like bramha Vishnu maheshwar kinda stuff :p

Alright. I accept the idea of God, and reject Trinity too.

@Agnishom Chattopadhyay Newton of the modern era!

Swapnil Das - 4 years, 9 months ago

Even though Newton created calculus, my favourite is Einstein, simply because of the way he thinks. He was just so creative; he revolutionised the way all of us humans look at the universe.
