Function Arithmetic

Functions follow some basic rules. For the following examples, we'll use these functions:

$ a(x) = x^2 $
$b(x) = x+3$
$c(x) = 4x$
Addition: $(f+g)(x) = f(x) + g(x)$ , so for example, $(b+c)(x) = 5x + 3$ .
Multiplication: $( f\cdot g)(x) = f(x) \cdot g(x)$ , so for example $(a\cdot b)(x) = x^2 + 3x^2$ .

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
