Google's Answer to 10\frac{1}{0}

I tried dividing 11 by 00 on Google's built-in calculator, and here's what I got:

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

It could also be Undefined, @David Stiff.

It could be. Though I haven't seen an argument for it's being undefined which could not be refuted by turning the coordinate plane into a torus (like this post I did).

David Stiff - 1 year, 1 month ago

if the coordinate plane is changed then the conditions are changed.
this is why the definition is: 1/0 = undefined ("Cannot divide by zero").
if it where defined to 0 or infinity or something else then there are cases where it does not fit.
so to find the solution to 1/0 (if there is one), the conditions of the case where it is used have to be checked.

Yeah, Undefined/Infinite I did this on another calculator. If yall use photomath it also states undefined.

Yeah. Except you thought that it was 00! Literally the one thing it's not is 00.

I never said it was zero duhhh! I know it is undefined

OOFMATION ANIMATION - 5 months, 3 weeks ago

I don't see why there is so much discussion in this matter, it's really quite straightforward that dividing by zero is nonsensical. https://brilliant.org/wiki/division-by-zero/

If you know David stiff he also have this

@Oofmation Animation He's pointing out the fact that Google's calculator says infinity, when the correct answer should be undefined. The limit of the expression 1/x as x approaches 0 should be infinity, not the actual value. The actual value should be undefined. Either way, it's really just pedantic. Doesn't matter in the long run.

@Krishna Karthik other calculator says undefined or infinity, so we should have to be so angry about this.
