Gravitational Waves verified ( A stunning, wonderful discovery)

So LIGO just verified last Thursday ( I think) the existence of gravitational waves. Since then, I've been curious about what space-time really looks like? are we contained in the space-time (like a small object (think of this as the Earth) contained in a bigger 3-dimensional object (think of this as the space-time)? If no (that space-time is just flat) then why can we see objects in all directions? why not just sidewards?.
