Guidance Section on Brilliant

On this wonderful site we all are learning too many fantastic things and meeting wonderful people from all over the world. Also, we see a big hierarchy of people on brilliant : there are people at level 1 as well as at level 5. I think I am not the only person who wonders how some people here on brilliant can do so much great, can remain so active and solve and make difficult problems. Usually many things must be different for these "high level people" than others. These things may include level of concentration, time management, sources available, perseverance, way of approaching problem solving, thinking process, strategy for learning new things and so on.

That said, I think it would be simply great if these people could share their way of doing things with other members. This will not only help those low level people but also people who are in higher levels but still are weak at a particular thing. In fact, I would like to request Brilliant to start a new section on the website where all these things can be put and can be found easily just like we have "practice section".

If you agree with this, please reshare and share your thoughts below. :)

  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

We love this idea, and have been talking about related ideas for a while.

How would you organize it, Snehal?

Thanks Silas.. I think we can make different sections. For example, let us say that one wants to learn more about thinking process involved in solving combinatorics problem. Then we would have section called "Problem solving strategies" or something in which there would be sub-section combinatorics. Then we can make that like wikipedia for example where users with fourth and fifth level in that particular topic can discuss and then edit it. Similarly, in the section "Books", we can recommend a particular hierarchy of books for a particular topic and which sections in each book should be studied. Also, we can give stress on books of "thinking system" type like Terence Tao's problem solving book. I would say, with these sections and subsections, we should make it like wikipedia and let people discuss and edit.

Another way could be "references" on each problem. On the bottom of a problem, people could put book's names, link to a note, link to a problem solving technique, etc... And if you stuck, you can go directly to the theory from the problem you were trying to solve.

So is the discussion about similar ideas still going on or is it rejected?

Snehal Shekatkar - 7 years, 3 months ago

I would like be really general so that things like time management and perseverance would also be included.

I agree with you

Feel the same over here!

Krishna Ar - 7 years, 1 month ago

Could be really helpful for me and others.
