Help! Help! Math Help!

Dear Fellow Brilliant Members and Awesome staff, I would like to ask you all as to how to improve my mathematics skills especially in the topics Algebra, Geometry and Advanced Combinatorics. I am very weak at solving equations and also finding the maxima and minima using algebra. Rather, I would say I am not familiar with them( many level 4 problems are based on these). Brilliant Technique trainer unfortunately doesnt have good material for the above mentioned topics. When it comes to geometry, I am hopeless at proofs and would like to work on them. Combinatorics also is something where I lack a good base in. I would like to know about some resources for the above topics and also methods on how to improve on them and become like most of the Brilliant prodigies here! Thanks.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

? Is this an answer or a question? Can you suggest me some resources for algebra, geometry and combinatorics?

Sorry, For Geometry I use Wikipedia and wolfram alpha to study new concepts and learn proofs. And what do you use to learn number-theory I am so bad at number theory.Any suggestions?

@Mardokay Mosazghi Ok...number theory is one of my favourite branches of math...I just picked it up from random problems. I still am not that good at manipulating congruences. May I know how Wolfram Alpha is used? And what is the secret to your super-good physics? I'm currently reading a book ( Indian)- called " Numbers and fun with them" which has a good dose of number theory infused in it and otherwise I just learn from solving problems and...my level 5 in number theory was not sheerly the result of effort :P

@Krishna Ar Also for physics just read the concepts and use exercise book and since you have the internet I use physicsgalaxy.com which is great because it starts with the basics and teaches you advanced parts.I am not that good at physics but I use mostly wikepedia to learn new stuff searching and surfing I guess, can you suggest any book for number theory. Also what greade are you in?

@Mardokay Mosazghi Ok...Book for number theory...sorry I don't know..but If I use one and have found it useful.. I shall let you know...What about algebra resources? And how do you exactly use Wolfram Alpha for geometry?...I am a year younger to you

Krishna Ar - 7 years ago

@Mardokay Mosazghi @Mardokay Mosazghi - Hey! You're a level 5 in Algebra ....so you must be able to tell me as to how to improve my algebra...websites/books/resources of any kind are welcome. And also don't forget to answer as to how to use WA in geometry ( u said u use it so). Thanks :)

Krishna Ar - 7 years ago

@Mardokay Mosazghi Oh La La! You're a level 5 in geometry....How??????

Krishna Ar - 7 years ago

@Mardokay Mosazghi @Mardokay Mosazghi - Please tell me as to how you use WA to learn geometry. How do you in general learn geometry? I consider it to be the weakest part of my math...pl rply

Krishna Ar - 7 years ago

@Aneesh Kundu -Hi! Sorry for tagging you here and I apologize if you didn't like it. I saw that off-late you've been solving a lot of geometry level 3 and 4 problems. And, you're of my age too. Thus I would request you to kindly help me improve my geometry skills. I see that you could help me out with the topics that I need to learn to get going. AFAIK, Geometry is never dealt with in detail in school curricula , so I would also like to know how you have such an indepth knowledge of this subject. Thanks in advance. Hope you would reply :)

The only way to learn geometry is by trying for hours and hours, being driven to the edge of insanity(I've been doing that for the last one year). Apply all the weird theorems u can, try all your imagination and at last try to think like the one who set the question and find that one thing that examiner wants u to find in order to solve the question. Working backwards can help a lot in proving questions. By the way kartica modi and I study in the same class(10th) and go to the same coaching.

Sorry for my late reply.

Aneesh Kundu - 6 years, 9 months ago

@Kartica Modi - Hi! Thanks for following me! I'd like to know how you learn algebra and number theory. You've recently hit level 5 in number theory and apart from that solve real tough problems in algebra. ( Eg- that geometrical inequality), so how do you know all this at 14? How did you go about learning this? I hope you check your email! ;) Thanks and look forward too your reply

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 12 months ago

@Satvik Golechha -Whoa!!!! That was so much in 2-3 days!!! How did you learn so much? You solved 5 level 4-5 geo problems and posted a super tricky dioophantine!!! How did you,.....Please...tell me

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 10 months ago

@Krishna Ar That actually was too much for 2-3 days....... I made great guesses in 20 level 4-5 in geometry, and I got 4 correct...... and 2 of them had the same answer :D BTW d'you know how to solve diophantines? Is there a specific method?

Satvik Golechha - 6 years, 10 months ago

My dear Satvik : @Satvik Golechha -I actually am slowly building up on things. I totally don't know about Diophantines (I can guess solutions using Mr.Euclid though :P),I think you're well aware about it since u've posted a super-hard problem on it!!!! ...And wait- How are you so evasive and always like- Out of 20 guesses got 4-5 right- too undeprlaying right??

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 10 months ago

@Krishna Ar My dear Krishna : @Krishna Ar I do not know even the definition of Diophantines, it just happened that a teacher gave such a question in the class.... And I am not being anything evasive.... I literally got 4 out of 20 guesses right. ><_))I

@Satvik Golechha AAMOF? You've learnt a quite lot in these few days and are solving too many awesome problems, especially inequalitites and calculus @Satvik Golechha

@Satvik Golechha Hmm...they do teach you quite a lot of extra's/// and only started and you tried and solved so many....wondrous!!!

@Krishna Ar @Krishna Ar Actually, they had ended inequalities, but I thought that was the starting... :D (Now you don' make anythin' o' it.)
