Help me become a mathematician!

Hello everyone, I completed my +2 this year and preparing for NEST exam (for NISER). First I thought of pursuing medicine (not because of passion but everyone did so I too) but now I realize my love for maths. So now I have no other option than this exam. But i have no idea how to prepare. I would be glad if u give me some suggestions regarding study plans and books. Currently I'm preparing JEE syllabus... So please may be your help may make my name come in ur children's textbooks in the future :)

The exam is on 28th may, so answer me fast even if u don't know at least share, so someone else can help me please.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

I am flattered you mentioned me!

I did not know about the NEST exam. But now it sounds good. Did you apply for the CMI and the ISI entrances? How is JEE Advanced coming along? I guess some of the IITs teach mathematics too. I do not have a lot of preparation advice, but @Sandeep Bharadwaj has some.

Given the tragic way math is taught today ( have you read Lockhart's lament? ), I would be more than happy to support a true enthusiast of math who writes a textbook. I am glad that you're choosing Mathematics over medicine, I did the same. I admire that you learnt to prioritize your academic interests over the huge hype for engg/medicine.

I reshared the note on Brilliant and also on twitter. I hope that helps a bit

First of all thank u for your help. I don't have anyone to guide me. I don't know about cmi and is before. But now their applications are closed. Even the JAM exam for doing bsc in iit is over. I wanted to study in iisc, so I prepared hard for neet ( cause a 60% in neet gets u into iisc) but to get admission there I should have applied in April itself. I lost all my chances. Even a failure in those exams would be much better than not attempting it all. I feel so bad. Do I still have a chance to study there?

@Ashley Shamidha I wish I could tell you but I do not really know this very well.

I did not know that NEET lets you get into IISc. That's great.

@Ashley Shamidha NEST questions are pretty good, enriched in deep concepts outlining the basic contours of 12 th and 11 th basic sciences. Give much emphasis on calculus part, specially to the functional analysis part, and most of it is like the JEE paper. Perhaps applying in the govt colleges for general sciences will be a good choice in pursuing your interest.

@Ashley Shamidha IIT Jam is for Msc and PhD at IIT's and IISc. You'll be able to pursue graduate studies after you complete your bsc from somewhere. You might want to have DU as a backup option. But only as a backup option. Let me know if you have any queries regarding DU.
