Help Needed -- Physics

Hello Brilliant friends, recently I have come across many level 4 and 5 mechanics and Em problems, from my observation I am unable to solve them because I lack the mathematical and some conceptual understanding. I want any recommendations such as books and lectures, especially Problem Solving Books with detailed solutions.Since Physics Olympiads are coming I wanted to prepare for them. Any help Appreciated!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Start from the basics, The basics of the advanced is bulit by IRODOV, then go for KROTOV, then 200 puzzling problems in physics, past year olympiad papers and if you want to study in depth, make time for Griffiths, purcell, Morrin and of course, FEYNMAN lectures

Me too big ban of Russian writers. Irodov is still, I think, unmatched in its level of difficulty. But would you suggest it for Olympiad. I 'm just asking, because I find the books has more general problems. Whereas Olympiads are notorious for being tricky. A book that surfaces where the students are more likely to make mistakes, would be more appropriate.

Then try 200 puzzling problems in physics. Its much more notorious than anyone can expect.

Tushar Gopalka - 6 years, 5 months ago

i totally agree with morin part, david morins classical mechanics is great, but yeah 200 problems are pretty hard, compared to iridov, have you fully finished it @Tushar Gopalka , i am still just digging through it

I too am dragging myself along. Have completed only till 30 questions. You?

Tushar Gopalka - 6 years, 5 months ago

Thank you for the recommendations @Tushar Gopalka I will start reading them, do you know if these books require mathematical skills above calculus?

Mardokay Mosazghi - 6 years, 5 months ago

Irodov and Krotov are more mathematically bent.

Soumo Mukherjee - 6 years, 5 months ago

Not required but make sure you have a good hold of calculus, especially integration and differential equations.

@Tushar Gopalka thank you very much

Mardokay Mosazghi - 6 years, 5 months ago

Nope! Calculus is all you need for Irodov.

Pranjal Jain - 6 years, 5 months ago

I think IRODOV and KROTOV are more than enough.

Pranjal Jain - 6 years, 5 months ago

What is the definition of enough?

Tushar Gopalka - 6 years, 5 months ago

Hmm.... Don't say u can't solve problems... Just work hard, study hard and don't give up. U av d power to solve problems. If some students can do it... U can also do it.. Just keep practicing nd don't give up.. There is sumtin in. Just bliv in ur self.. '''IT'S IN U'''.

Ayanlaja Adebola - 6 years, 5 months ago

get these two: Halliday, Resnick & Krane, vol 1, vol 2. One of those which blend math and physics harmoniously.

Okay, and these..., "learning physics through interesting problem solving", that's the motto of these two: HCV1 & HCV2

Soumo Mukherjee - 6 years, 5 months ago

Buy the book "Advanced problems in School physics" Vol-1 and Vol-2 by Cengage Learning. Its an awesome book with questions of a level much higher than Irodov but I am doubtful of its availability in USA

Tushar Gopalka - 6 years, 4 months ago

Try IIT physics by anurag Mishra...best for both concepts and problem solving..

akash singh - 6 years, 4 months ago

fundamentals of physics may prove to be useful.

Ravi Ranjan - 6 years, 5 months ago

Conceptual Physics - special edition series - best conceptual book I know. It's how I came to understand the universe. Absolutely underpriced.

Fundamentals of Physics - best operational book I know. It's how I'm learning to solve problems in physics, in my AP Physics C course.

Oh, and by the way, learn Calculus. It is arguably the most beautiful and most useful mathematical subject invented by mankind. If you have some money, I can suggest you possibly the best math lectures in existence on the subject of Calculus.

Good luck.

Some advanced problems are in physics olympiad of I.SH. SLOBODETSKI

Read griffiths

Paulyn Hayahay - 6 years, 4 months ago

yes thts true

Baranee Tharan - 6 years, 4 months ago

Use resnick halliday for theory and problems if u complete that switch to I R Irodov. Because it is tough.

AAYUSH SHRIVASTAVA - 6 years, 3 months ago

Problems in general physics by I.E. Irodov may be helpful

Vinamra Bathwal - 6 years, 5 months ago

Yes for around 25 dollars....on Amazon.com

Tushar Gopalka - 6 years, 5 months ago

Sorry I don't know but u can buy in from any good site...believe...If u read it u all find some new from that...and solve objectives of that book.....

Puneet Mehra - 6 years, 5 months ago

You can order it on amazon or any other online shopping site

Kushal Patankar - 6 years, 5 months ago

@Kushal Patankar ok thanks. I didn't know that.

..so that's a book everyone interested in physics must have. Got to recommend it too.

Soumo Mukherjee - 6 years, 5 months ago

I would recommend that you watch some videos on Youtube , especially channels such as "Khan Academy" , "Dr Physics A" , and websites such as "hyper physics , .........." , and as far as i know A level Mathematics books are very very useful , especially the latest versions ! Wish u nothing but the best !

Thank you sir for the recommendations, i will check them out.

Mardokay Mosazghi - 6 years, 5 months ago

I think University physics is helpful to you

amar datta - 6 years, 5 months ago

Hello Friend, well i can understand that. i am also preparing for the upcoming Physics Olympiad. For conceptual guidance, i would recommen you to go through the book by Resnik-Halliday. Its the "godbook" for clearing physics concepts. and for Probelm Solving part, first you should solve "Problems In Genreal Physics"" by I.E.Irodov. and after completing that you can go through the book by Krotov. these two are solely for high-level physics problems.

Hope That Helps.
