Options are provided but try not use in the solution A) 29 kg B) 30 kg C) 31 kg D) 32 kg

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

LET THE WEIGHTS BE A,B,C,D. WHERE A>=B>=C>=D. SO A+B = 57, AS A+B IS THE LARGEST. A+C=56, C+D= 48 B+D=49 BUT NOW B+C=52 AND A+D=53, OR THE VICE VERSA. TAKE BOTH CASES SEPARATELY AND TRY SOLVING.

IN ONE CASE, A=30.5, B=26.5 ,C=25.5 AND D=22.5, AND IN THE OTHER, A=30, B=27, C=26, D=22.

SO 30.5 AND 30 ARE THE ANSWERS, BUT FORM THE OPTIONS, B IS CORRECT.

Yup. Just some logic and linear equations. Weights are 22, 26, 27, 30.

Yong See Foo - 8 years, 4 months ago

Yea i just guessed 30 :P

Sridhar Thiagarajan - 8 years, 3 months ago

Actually 30.5 and 30 kg are 2 possibilities.;)

Sambit Senapati - 8 years, 3 months ago

Its 30 but I'd like some convincing equations.

Sridhar Thiagarajan - 8 years, 3 months ago

Weight of the tallest boy? The tallest boy might not be the heaviest.
