How do I change level?

I did the level 1 problem on the diagnostic exam when I joined up and now I am stuck on level 2. I'd really rather not wait multiple weeks of answering easy problems to get to level 5. Is there a way I can retake the diagnostic exam? Or should I just create a new account and answer the level 5 question?

There should be a system by which someone can choose to level down as I know that in the past I have made it to a higher level by answering all of the questions in a week but then I would not be able to get of the questions the following week. After that you have to purposefully get the questions wrong in order to move your level down causing you to miss a week's worth of questions. I don't think you should be able to level yourself up though, that would lead to lots of problems. If level 2 is easy you should be able to get up to your proper level in no time at all.

No time at all? that's actually pretty inaccurate, especially with the new leveling system. I'm in level two physics right now (as I'm taking my first physics class only this year) and as I've learned more physics things in class, I've been able to answer many more questions now. For example, last week I answered 3/4 of the problems and my rating went up by 4 points. If I had answered the last one as well, it would have went up probably about 30 points total. If someone wants to get to level 5 (2100+ points?) from level 2 (1350-1500?) that would take quite a long time, and I understand oliver's frustration.

If level 5 ratings work the same way, last week I answered 4/4 of the questions in each mathematics categories in level 5 and my rating went up trivially. Last week I was 240x in number theory, this week I'm 2417 (having not looked at an of the problems yet).

To Oliver, I would say your best bet is to retake the diagnostic exam on a new account (though double accounts I think are against brilliant's rules, this is a special case I think).

me too had Number theory rating last week as 24xx ....as soon as i solved a question correctly today, it dropped down to 23xx .:) ... Unable to understand system well.

@Piyushkumar Palan – I think its because when you view the first question of a problem set you are penalized a certain amount of points. When you view the other questions in the problem set this penalty seems to decrease. I find I may lost 50 points for viewing the first question in the set and that I wont lose any at all after viewing the 4th one. Some of the first questions are worth less than the amount you are penalized so you will have a net loss in points but if you answer more than just the first question you will find your score will increase at a decent rate. For example last week in physics I only gained about 10 points after doing the first question as I lost about 50 points for viewing the set, but after I completed all of the other question I went up by about 100-125ish as the penalties were much less for viewing the third and fourth problems.

It would be interesting to hear from the Brilliant staff exactly how rating was calculated and how these increases and deductions occur because everyone seems to think their rating system works differently.

@Cole Coupland – Viewing a problem (that is not in practice) will cost you some points. The penalty is higher for lower rated problems, since we believe that you would be able to solve them. If you do solve it, your rating will increase.

If you solve a lower rater problem, your rating will increase by a smaller amount. You also gain fewer points if you require multiple attempts.

For ratings below 2000, solving all 4 problems at your level should give you a net increase of 100-150 points, and hence you will level up after 2 weeks. Of course, you can also proactively do other problems (esp harder ones) and level up that way.

For ratings above 2250, it does take a bunch of work to keep them increasing weekly.

Michael, I see that you viewed 5 physics problems, and got 3 correct (of which 1 was only correct on the third try). Your rating went up by 80 points during the week, mainly due to answering the first 2 questions correctly.

Piyush, I see that your rating was barely over 2400 last week, and it has dropped to slightly below 2400 this week, because you have viewed 4 problems and answered 1. You will gain those points (and more) when you answer the questions.

Cole, part of the confusion, is that people often do not separate out rating changes from different problems. Like you said, answering the first problem correctly gave you net 10 points. Answering the next few problems correctly (might) give you net 20, 40, 60 points. Especially for those that do a bunch of clicking around, they do not track the various rating losses.

Well I don't know about you but my rating seems to be increasing differently. Two weeks ago I had a 1500 ish rating in combinatorics and now I am over 1750 after two weeks of solving each problem correctly. Maybe your rating only went up four points because it took you multiple attempts on each question to get them right? My other subjects have increased at a similar rate. I find that if I answer all of the problems in a week my rating will increase by 125. So after two weeks of correct answers you should be up a level.

If you have your rating, then just open the profiles of the fellows here, & solve some level 5 problems. If your rating becomes > 2000, you will level up! (Unless you want to discard your current profile)

My level seems stuck for Algebra and Number Theory. I had a rating in the low $1900$ 's in both of them to start this week (and haven't yet looked at the problems). However, it still shows I am at Level $5$ in both. Am I stuck?

That has happened to me also. I have a rating that should be level 3, but I am still in level 4.

You are not stuck in a level. There is slight leeway when your rating drops, to prevent your level from fluctuating heavily when you are right on the threshold.

Trevor, I see that you are now level 4 in both topics.

No. Just do well on all the easy problems and you'll be moved up. Also, you can only end up in such a low Level if you got about 2-3 wrong. If you get just Problem 1 wrong, you should be in at least Level 3.

Ahaan, they've changed the system. Now you only must answer one question per level you want to try.
