How Many Should We Take?

Imagine that we all have to pick a number. Then, each day, you'll be forced to eat or drink something at random. You might get to eat ice cream or swallow a rock, as well as drink water or drink lava. You must eat the same number of things every day. The number of things you eat every day is based on the number you pick. All of the drinks are given to you in one cup measurements. Finally, you can't pick the number 0, you can't pick a decimal number, and you MUST eat the food or drink the drink you get, edible or not, or drinkable or not. What number would you pick?

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

This problem is tricky, because if you pick a high number, you might be rewarded greatly by drinking 1000 cups of lemonade or 1000 bowls of ice cream. However, you might have to drink 1000 cups of lava, or eat 1000 bowls of your poop, which is yucky (bleeeeeuuuuggggghhhhh). However, if you pick a low number, you might only have to drink 2 cups of wolf urine or eat 2 beds. However, you would miss out on a lot of good stuff, when you only get to drink 2 cups of lemonade or eat 2 bowls of ice cream, when you could have got much more. But it's mainly about surviving, and eating tasty stuff is a minority. Eating bad stuff is a problem, but if you pick a low number, like 1, you won't have to suffer so much, so it's best you choose the lowest number possible, which is 1. So if you ever get into a situation like this, you know how to fight against it.
