How To Get Your Problem Shared/Liked On Brilliant

The Brilliant Community has been contributing interesting problems which are shared for everyone to enjoy. We have noticed a steady increase in the quality of problems that have been written up, which is much appreciated by the other members.

Here are some pointers to make your problems stand out:

Simplify your statements and state them precisely. Do not try to be tricky.
Use clear sentences and statements. Check your punctuation and grammar.
Add a relevant image which helps to attract attention.
Choose a title which reflects the content of the problem.
Read other interesting problems and think about what made them interesting to you, and how they were put together.
Share something unique and fun. Interesting and thought provoking problems tend to get more likes and shares.
Write a solution, which allows others to learn from you. This also helps you to ensure that the problem is correctly stated.
Add the (correct) topic and level, which provides context about your problems.
Avoid any ambiguity; define uncommon terms.
Present your math equations clearly. If you do not know Latex, you can always handwrite the problems, take a photo of it and upload the image. For example, Find Area Of Shaded Portion.
Preview to ensure that your problem appears correctly. Read through your problem before hitting Post.
Edit the problem as you respond to clarifications or disputes. Delete it if necessary.
State the numerical constants that you used. Use typical values.

Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.

These are excellent pointers. I hope that Brilliant will continue to push for quality of problems, but of course it depends on the Brilliant Community to keep up with the excellence. Problems should be clearly and well worded, and answers should be accurate and unique. Good peer review is a must for Brilliant to succeed in its goals.

You should be able to see the total like and reshare stats on a particular problem. For example, this note currently has been liked 29 times, reshared 20 times and has 9 replies. I would encourage you to like and/or reshare problems that you are interested in, as that gives others a strong indication that you are engaged with it.

If you are the creator of a problem (and have email notifications enabled), we do send you an email indicating which person has liked / reshared your problem / note / set.

I apologize for my english, of course I was not clear in my question. :-( My question was about how to avoid posting a repeated problems. (e.g., someone in the past have already posted same problem)

@Eloy Machado – The best way for you to get it rated, is to give an approximate level that you think it would be at. It will be given a provisional rating that will be updated according to how others attempt the problem. Once we are confident about the rating, then it will be displayed.

Staff do not actively rate problems.

I am not sure why but I have stopped getting emails of who all liked/reshared my questions via email. I used ro get them 2 weeks back. Now it has stopped.

You can contribute problems on desktop or mobile web.

This functionality isn't available on the apps as yet.

You can only choose from the chapters that are listed out in our topic maps.

When you start typing, you will see suggestions for possible candidates. E.g.

How can you post a picture in a problem that can zoom, so that the content of the picture are visible more clearly?

There is currently no way to do that. Ideally, the picture should provide sufficient detail, and help guide understanding of the problem. It shouldn't be necessary to use the picture in order to answer the problem (except for actual pictorial problems in geometry).

At the most, you can request that people open the picture to zoom in.

I think posting image is only possible via computer but not through mobile devices. How to include image while posting problem through mobile devices?

You can always hyperlink to an existing image on the web via the markdown syntax of ![caption](image URL).

If you are referring to using the browser on mobile, then when you post a problem, solution or note, you have a formatting toolbar that allows you to upload images directly.

Note that this functionality is not available for comments , on both mobile and the app. Note that you currently are unable to post problems or notes from the app.
