How to make matrices using latex code

Well ,I read the note "Beginner LaTeX Guide" given by Daniel Liu ... But I didn't understood that how exactly do we need to make a matrix or a determinant...For this topic the information in the guide is not clear to me ... Please Help... Suggestions are welcomed here..

Use the pmatrix or the matrix environments, similar to how you use align or array.

To start you off,

\begin{pmatrix}

\end{pmatrix}

gives us
