This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

By the way are you really 14? I think I saw a picture of you on Facebook and you look nothing like a 14 year old....:) no offence in any way.

This was me last year after 114 on both the 10A and 10B two years ago >:(

But it turned out fine last year :D

Oh gosh. Any tips?

Not me personally, last year's was a disaster for me, mostly due to lack of experience and knowledge. This year however, I'm ready for revenge. Speaking of last year's AMC, I discovered brilliant only a few days before the exam...a few paragraphs of how Brilliant have helped me.....

Good luck to everyone!

Last year? Wow. I got something like 102 on 10B. :/

I received scores ranging from 114-126 on the last 3 practice AMC 10s...

UGH STILL NOT ENOUGH TO MAKE AIME T_T

@Michael Diao Questions that plague me:

What if I don't make AIME? How should I become better?

Michael Diao - 7 years, 4 months ago

@Michael Diao You are only 13 so you still have a long road ahead of you. I, on the other hand, do not....But then again I only do math solely for the enjoyment of problem solving and all the wonderful results behind certain topics, so I shouldn't worry too much.

Regarding the question of becoming better, I think it's observable to yourself. For instance, a few months ago I wasn't able to do problems confidently, and I guessed through a lot of problems without rigorous logic on Brilliant. Now, although still not up to standard, I feel like I've become a more well-arounded problem solver(in a lot of ways).

I will be taking the AMC 12, which have been getting progressively harder each year. during the exam, my plan is to get through at least the first 13 problems as fast as possible, if I could get that far. At that point, I would be satisfied and go on to see if there's any geometry or number theory or counting problems since those are my bests.

@Xuming Liang You still have over 50 years to study and expand your knowledge. Math doesn't end at college.

Daniel Wang - 7 years, 4 months ago

@Xuming Liang Wow! I have no strategy...

Bob Yang - 7 years, 4 months ago

@Michael Diao I took a few timed tests by myself too. For all of them I was able to get the first 15 correct with decent time left, I will take another one tomorrow to see if I'm really ready.

Xuming Liang - 7 years, 4 months ago

@Michael Diao I got 132, 126, and 139.5 for the last three AMC10 practices...

be sure to minus your score by about 15-ish to get your real-time score otherwise you'll be overconfident like me last year

This is my first year taking the AMC 12. I bombed the AMC 10 last year, but I've been getting ~120 on the practice AMC 12s, so I think I'm safe.

Making USAMO is another matter, though. I got a 4 on the last practice AIME I took. Ugh.

I sympathize.

Bob Yang - 7 years, 4 months ago

If I were to take the AIME instead of the AMC 12, I feel like I would do better in the AIME because we're given more time and the problems are a lot more like the ones on Brilliant here :) For the AMC, however and from personal experience, we only have a 75 min time pressure and you basically have to be "keen" and keep everything clear for each problem you encounter. On last year's AMC I missed a few easy questions(below #10) due to over-complicating some of the problems and that I simply just didn't fully understand what they are asking for.

There's almost always an elegant solution to each AMC problem(not so sure about this), so always look out for any shortcuts(this means thinking about several possible approaches and choose the best one to begin) while doing a problem. This might not make any sense yet but I will elaborate tomorrow...:)

Xuming Liang - 7 years, 4 months ago

I just took a practice AIME. I got a 7. :(

Bob Yang - 7 years, 4 months ago

I took both the AMC 10 and 12 last year and failed. But it was my first time so... I've been doing timed tests and can get around 110 on the more recent tests for 12, so I think I'm pretty safe unless this year's tests are really hard.

Does anyone know where I could find more mock tests? I've nearly finished doing each of the real AMC 12 tests from the last 13 years (starting from 2000) for the second time, and I'm afraid I get my score because I simply memorized. :(

Do all of the AHSME on AoPS (starting from 1950). Only 8 of the years are incomplete.

I sucked horribly last year. First time taking the test, I was so nervous and I had been told by so many people that it was ridiculously hard that I flopped 6th place in the school when I could have been 1st or 2nd. :(
