  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

@Trevor Arashiro

Greetings to all Brilliantians.

I am fluent in 3 languages. Here's how one wishes this season's greetings :

In Hindi (Main language of India) शुभ क्रिसमस (śubh krisamas) Merry Christmas नये साल की हार्दिक शुभकामनायें (naye sāl kī hārdik śubhkāmnayeṅ) Happy New Year

In Malayalam (an Indian language): ക്രിസ്തുമസ്, പുതുവത്സര ആശംസകള്‍ (kristumas puthuvalsara āshamsakal) - Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

And, In English: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

Wow, In the USA, most people only speak 1 language. In most other countries, I've hesrd that people usually speak 2-3 languages.

Trevor Arashiro - 6 years, 5 months ago

Haha India has 22 different national languages! Thanks to the Brits, most of the people in India know their mother tongue, English, and Hindi. However, many of the languages, if not most, have common roots, and similar grammar. So if you've learnt one, learning another isn't too tough.

About Indian languages:

From Wikipedia:

''The Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution lists 22 languages, which have been referred to as scheduled languages and given recognition, status and official encouragement.'' ''According to Census of India of 2001, India has 122 major languages and 1599 other languages. However, figures from other sources vary, primarily due to differences in definition of the terms "language" and "dialect". The 2001 Census recorded 30 languages which were spoken by more than a million native speakers and 122 which were spoken by more than 10,000 people. Two contact languages have played an important role in the history of India: Persian and English. Hindi, the most widely spoken language in India today, serves as a lingua franca for much of the country.''

Season's Greetings and Bonne Année, Trevor. (That's Canadian, btw. :P) I spent one Christmas on Maui umpteen years ago; favourite holiday ever. Anyway, enjoy your break, get some golf in and don't get too carried away posting stuff on Brilliant. :)

Haha. Canadians, polite and nice as always :D. I'm actually going to Maui next week for golf. It's the most beautiful island, second only to Kauai, although Maui has much more to offer activity wise. You definately chose the right island to vacation on!
