i am confused

i have just gone to class 11 this April , i want to give JEE so i have also joined a coaching institute. now my coaching institute is super fast and i am not at all able to keep pace with chemistry as well as some part of physics(i am also not enjoying while studying them specially chemistry )even though i am loving maths there . due to this i am not able to build my concepts properly. now even i don't want to change my batch in my coaching as it has the best faculty and also since i am not clear with my previous concepts i am not able to cope up with the new topics that are taught now . i want to crack JEE and exams such as KVPY and RMO but if this continues i am sure i wont be able to crack them .i am thinking if i could study physics and chemistry in my school or on my own and would go for maths to the same coaching. would this be beneficial ?? also if i want to get into foreign colleges like MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) what is required? is it better than IIT . also i have my interest in mathematics and want to do engineering what shall i do???

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

this problem is faced by many, including me ! but what i think is that you should not discontinue phy and chem coaching because there are many topics and concept which only expert teachers can teach us. If you don't understand the things on the same day then you need to practise and read more, and clear your doubts in a day or two, this will help you alot. All the best :)

Your dreams are quite big I believe but dont worry too much just keep on focussing on the basics. If you still cant go on forget whatever they teach you under the name of kvpy. For it you can take a 3 week leave from school and study hard. Good mathematics that you possess will surely help in it.Are Mole concept and atomic structure troubling you. Reply if you want any tips.

Any help on chemical bonding......

Chemical bonding is a really vast topic.I did it drom 3 books. 1 ncert 2. Jd lee 3 solomons and fryhle and still iam not even 90% sure about it. But these 2 books have 1 or more topics on it and are very helpful. Hope you find it useful.

mole concept atomic structure, and chemical bonding are troubling me a lot

I think the main problem is that you are kind of mathematical guy who does not accept things easily so maybe you need to be more flexible in your approach. As i promised you the tips here are they

  1. Do basic questions first which require conversions of moles into grams and so on.

2.Then go for basic questions of molarity and normality, equivalents etc.

4.Do not start new topic unless you are confident with the previous one.As well said in the above note you need to slow down your pace a bit.In class 11 things are sometimes quite different so it may take some time for you to understand them so dont panic.

  1. Now after you have done your basics you can go for some higher level problems. I think P Bahadur Numerical Chemistry is the best for problems.

7.Last but not the least dont just start doing calculations as you see the question ( it was a mistake which i did and do even now sometimes, advising is certainly easy than following it) understand what the question wants see what is given and what is asked and which formulas and methods you can use to get it.

Meet your coaching faculty they will surely understand the problem better.

You can contact Ronak Agarwal on brilliant i believe he's the best for you to take some advice.

Atomic structure and chemical bonding are relatively easy. Which parts are troubling you the most?

@Satvik Choudhary so shall i change my coaching institute in order to slow my pace because they are moving quite fast . i was also thinking if i could join a kind of private classes where they prepare for JEE and start over building my concepts again, but at the same time i am loving math at my coaching ?? so shall i stay in the institute or shall i leave that's my confusion??

@Avn Bha A suggestion...

Just follow your institute religiously, you will get used to the pace very soon. And as for the private tuition, believe me, you wont have time to cope up even with your own institute, let alone an extra tuition.

Pankaj Joshi - 5 years, 12 months ago

try to get resonance sheet of chemical bonding ! it will be a great help.

anukriti singh - 6 years ago

I would suggest you one thing, please don't think diversely... Just try to concentrate on one thing. I guess you are facing problem in chemistry because of mole concept :D... That chapter requires better understanding but don't worry at the end you will be okay with it. And please, never ever try to speed up your pace... That's the worst thing you can do at this time. Be in your own limits, there may be someone in your batch who can play guitar and maybe be you can't. So stay in your limits and trust me if you will work hard, you can achieve anything. Getting into MIT is a different thing. For that you should have excellent profile which constitutes your academic records, extracurricular activities, leadership qualities, community work(like NGO) and your standardized test scores like : SAT, SAT SUBJECT TEST, TOEFL. And as i have appeared for both, these tests are tremendously easier than iitjee, all you need is better understanding of language. Good luck :-)

I respect every field, but I want you to pursue mathematics and carry out research in it, The world needs you!

You are right . there is a need for more mathematicians and mathematics research in India. However the best mathematics department in the world is of Princeton University

The departments become best, only because of their mathematicians, not their facilities, remember.

Sriram Venkatesan - 6 years ago

Well Sriram,Can you suggest me some problems in Brilliant, which would be thought provoking?

Swapnil Das - 6 years ago

so what shall i do to pursue it ? i mean which college shall i join ? how shall i plan my future?

As far as research is concerned, IISc, CMI, and ISI are some of the best institutes in India...And for more info, you have your friend Google.

Pankaj Joshi - 6 years ago

I suggest you to join IISc or IIT ( It has produced many mathematicians!)

Swapnil Das - 6 years ago

Start doing research in it at an early age.

Swapnil Das - 6 years ago

Well I am also an aspiring Mathematician and Physicist.
