I shouldn't be wrong!

It should be -2. Why did they sum the 20? 20 is a constant, not a coefficient, right? And also, the solution has one more error also.. Look at the part when the x2x^2 is multiplied with the function inside the bracket besides it.

Edit: I know that after 20 there is a variable of x which has power of 0. But, isn't it still a constant?

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

I know that after 20 there is a variable of x which has power of 0. But, isn't it still a constant?

Yes, it is a constant. And it is the co-efficient of x0x^0.

The coefficient of the constant term 20x0 20 x^0 is 20.

Thanks for pointing out the typo in the solution. I've edited it. It should say -3 instead of -5 throughout, and in the second solution 3131 should be replaced by 3×1 3 \times 1 . The final answer of 18 is still correct.

I noticed that after you view solutions, the link is not available. I'd get the link to be displayed. In the meantime, you can send me an email with the screenshot, and I'd check it out. Thanks!
