Whenever I solve problems of levels lower than my level, my rating of the topic decreases. For example, I have a rating 1600 in any topic, but if I solve any problem of rating 1300 in that topic, my rating goes down {1580}. And It always happens with me. Is it correct or is it a problem with my account?? Am I the only one with this trouble?? If its a problem, I request the staff to please take note of it..

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

I'm a new user of Brilliant, and I've noticed that my ratings seem to change randomly, but it sure seems to go down a lot more easily than up. I think the Brilliant staff is still working on this problem. I just wish we somehow get a clear explanation of why our ratings changes, up or down. It's as mysterious as why our credit scores go up or down, it's totally counter-intuitive.

Yeah, I had the same problem as you and it's down a lot than up.
Thanks for the report, everyone. We will track down the causes.
Sometimes this happens when you have more than one problem open in tabs at a time.
Hi Sanyam,
This definitely shouldn't happen. I'm looking into possible reasons for this to happen. I've checked the backend and do not see any case that your topic rating decreased when solving a correct problem (regardless of the level of the problem).
Can you provide me with more information about the correct attempts which resulted in a decrease in ratings?
If you can state the titles of the problems, I would be able to look into specifics.
Did we state that your rating went down? If so, please send me a screenshot .

Thanks a lot Calvin, I will try to provide you with more details and revert back to you soon.
Dear Calvin sir, since the time I have posted this note , that problem no more occurs with me. I know its hard to believe but it is really happening now. Thanks a lot to you and all other brilliants who actively participated in this discussion.
I think I have a similar problem, My level always down when I'm away for a long time. I don't know how it happened

Your ratings and level do not change due to inactivity. If you give me a period when you were not around and your rating went down, I can trace if any attempts were made on your account.

It's been like for 3 times I got the same problem over and over again. I once got to level 4 on all subject except calculus, computer science, magnetism, and mechanism after that I leave it like it be, after about 2 weeks when I open my brilliant again, it's all gone and I came back to level 1 and 2.

Furthermore, over the past 3 months, I do not see you crossing over to level 4. The highest rating that I see was in Algebra, where you obtained about 1600 (level 3) at the start of January.
A possible explanation for rating change when a member is not around, is that we updated the answer to a problem which you tried. In this case, you would have received an email indicating the problem, and whether you were marked correct or wrong. However, I do not see this happen for you.

As it stands now, I have to carefully keep records of what happens to my ratings with each time I take on a problem. It's been an eye-opener, and consequently it's changing my tactics on Brilliant, and encouraging me to spend less time on it, as I believe that the motivating factors are badly skewed.
I think it's about a month ago for the last time it happens. And before it, it's about 2 month or less
This thing happened to me a while ago.
But now, anytime I solve problems of levels lower than mine, my rating stays the same.
I am having this problem too. My ratings have been decreasing even though I get the answer right.
Sanyam Stay Cool! [as your name suggests] Don't go onto the ratings. You just try more problems and increase your skill. That's more important. And after all there is a Brilliant team behind this problem.
