IPhOO - Contest Series for all Ages

The Online Math Open and the National Internet Math Olympiad have been serving us continuously with competitions recently - for the last couple of years. However, science has been behind in this. The Physics equivalent of the OMO and NIMO is finally here! The International Physics Online Olympiad, founded by myself, is up all just for you. Visit our website at www.onlinescienceolympiads.org to find out more. All you have to do is go Contests -> Register and you can participate in any upcoming competitions. Note that you only have to register once and you do not have to participate in all competitions. The Registration is done for you to be able to participate securely in the competitions you want to participate in.

In our website, you will see, at the top-right, Facebook and Twitter links, where you can follow us for updates on upcoming competitions. Some of our contests will have prizes, like certificates and T-shirts. We also have a forum on ArtofProblemSolving.com (forum #991) for problem discussion: http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/Forum/viewforum.php?f=991

Feel free to comment here for questions! Hoping to see you at the IPhOO.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Thank you so much! You are not too old to participate in the competitions that are not age-restricted. You should register so that you can get updates on future competitions that you might want to participate in.

a) I don't understand your comment. b) I am 13 years old. c) Where are you getting this information from?

I think he means that after he looked on your profile (on iphoocontest.wix.com/home), he doesn't believe you are 13.

Maybe your server is slow. We are getting registrations still and I just tested it. Try Ctrl+R if it doesn't load after about a minute.

If you're going to try to do something like this, please, at the very least register a domain and write the code yourself. Wix is a joke; it has never been and will never be taken seriously. It really isn't that hard to write such a simple type of site, and you will only damage accessibility and reach by choosing to use such a platform.

Also, a point of interest is that NIMO and OMO all have several writers, many of whom have degrees in mathematics or who have attained national recognition, not to mention any of the other numerous people necessary for development. There are random elements thrown across the page and the color scheme makes me cringe. You overestimate your knowledge of physics, appear to have little to no knowledge of web design or code, and need to change a lot about this if you want any chance of advancing this. (By the way, I have to quickly point out the irony in your title, "Contest Series for all Ages" considering that it's "restricted to students in 12th grade or below").

We think it is really cool that Ahaan is taking the initiative to organize a physics competition. It may have a long way to go, but we see no reason to let inexperience get in the way of putting in real work toward making something new.

Peter Taylor Staff - 8 years ago

Thank you so much for the encouragement, Peter! It really helps and makes me feel more driven toward the project. :)

Max: We appreciate your feedback. To answer some of your questions (which have been put in the form of statements), here:

1) Spending money on the domain is on a lower priority than fulfilling people's demands about prizes. By consensus, people are more interested in participating in the competition and getting their due rewards than to see a fancy website. We will, however, not ignore this issue and will get a domain registered in the future.

2) About our experience, Bat and I are students, yes, just as the NIMO / OMO problem-writers - they don't have degrees, they have awards. Although we have not received any such particular awards yet, we do our best to be good students in the subject, which is what makes us think that we can be good problem-writers. As for the credentials of the other two problem-writers, Trung and Xiao, if you have a doubt about their resume even after knowing they are students at MIT, you might be interested to know that Trung is a problem-writer and Brilliant.org Levels 3 to 5 and works at the Theoretical Center for Physics and MIT and is a Teaching Assistant, and Xiao is majoring in Civil Engineering and Physics is her strength. Most of this has been mentioned on the site.

3) About the difficulty levels, you seem to have missed the difference between "Contest Series for all Ages" and "Restricted to students in 12th grade or below". The very first contest is restricted, since it will purposely be of an introductory level, encouraging many and all capable to participate. If you are not challenged by it but you are in 12th grade or below, you should participate, earn the prize, and then wait for a more difficult competition, where all of our problem-writers will participate in submitting problems.

I think I have addressed all your complaints. I'm sorry if you haven't and I'm sorry if you are disappointed by the IPhOO. Again, we appreciate your feedback and hope to improve in the future! As a final note, out of curiosity, a question for you: I notice you have just made an account. Brilliant.org discourages multiple accounts. ;)

Thank you, again, Peter, for standing by us!
