In 1958 , Pauli fell ill with pancreatic cancer . When his last assistant,Charlws Enz , visited him at the Rotkreuz hospital in Zurich , Pauli asked him: Did you see the room number ? . $\color{#3D99F6}{It~was~\boxed{137}}$ . Throughout his life , Pauli had been preoccupied with the question of why the fine structure constant , a dimensionless fundamental constant , has a value nearly equal to $\color{#D61F06}{\dfrac{1}{\boxed{137}}}$ . Pauli died in that room on 15 December 1958.

If I'm not wrong, when Pauli was placed in room 137, he told his assistant that it was "the end".
