Is The God A Mathematician?

Mathematics is known for circumscribing stunning beauty of the existing patterns and relationships. And when such an awesomeness is around it becomes quite reluctant to say it a random coincidence. At that point of time one is compelled to think whether the God, itself, created Mathematics. Is the God a mathematician?

I'm here with an amusing property of numbers, lets name it as THE GOD PROPERTY which is revealed in the following steps.

Step 1: Think of any whole number in you mind (say X).

Step 2: Rearrange the digits of that whole number in any way you like. And lets say the new number obtained after the rearrangement is Y.

Step 3: Then |X-Y| is divisible by 9.

Here I will take you through a couple of illustrations of THE GOD PROPERTY.

Illustration 1:

  1. I thought of a 3 digit number 235.

  2. I rearranged 235 as 523.

  3. Subtracting: 523-235=288, which is divisible by 9.

Illustration 2:

  1. I thought of a 7 digit number 1987653.

  2. I rearranged it as 7856319.

  3. Subtracting:7856319-1987653=5868666, which is divisible by 9.

You are not finished yet. Here goes the stuff you can play around and poke this beauty.

Question 1: Prove that this is trye for any whole number of 4 digits.

Question 2: Prove that this is true for any whole number of any digits.

Clarification:

This note is not a debate or a discussion about anything related to the God. And if you're interested in such discussions, you can refer to the note: Does God exist?. Or you can join the Philosophy channel on Brilliant-Lounge and lead/participate/start the discussions over there.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.
