This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Haven't even started studying inorganic chemistry :(

Mine Expectations in jee mains are 230-240/360 but if everything goes well (with no silly mistakes at all) I can expect 260-270 score.... hope it goes well

Can't comment anything on jee advance

@Karan Shekhawat I am currently focusing to build stronger and stronger exam temparement not to commit even a single mistake in Jee mains. I gave jee mains 2014 at home and was getting a sick 310/360. I got 105 in physics thanks to my three silly mistakes, 115 in maths again one silly mistake, and 90 in chemistry making me realise that I have to prepare NCERT well enough.

For Jee advanced I had even a bigger problem of commiting silly mistakes.

I gave Jee advanced 2013 at home and getting only 290/360 and I calculated that my silly mistakes dragged me from 320 to 290.

I have saved Jee advanced 2014 paper as a one last chance to improve myself.

Also since I have no lack of test papers hence I am continually giving tests at home. Also reading NCERT for preparing inorganic chemistry.

@Ronak Agarwal @Ronak Agarwal - listen , please explain

when we balance redox reactions, and it has been said that we should balance in acidic medium, then the task is to make sure both mass and charge is conserved on either side and that any hydrogen and oxygen atoms should be balanced using H+ and H2O,

That is understandable, but in this process sometimes we add H+ on the RHS (product side of the equation) to balance the equation, isnt that wrong, because when we say reaction occurs in acidic medium, dont we mean that acid was originally present already in the reaction mixture, how is it logically justified to add H+ on the right side of the equation, which would mean that acid is not supporting the reaction but rather formed in it,

Mvs Saketh - 6 years, 4 months ago

Log in to reply

@Mvs Saketh Can you please quote one example of a reaction in which H+ is added on the R.H.S. and the reaction is being done in the acidic medium. @Mvs Saketh

Ronak Agarwal - 6 years, 4 months ago

Log in to reply

@Ronak Agarwal Heres an example for Basic medium (all the same i suppose)

source : Pg 267, 11 CBSE chemistry part 2 , example problem 8.9

The balanced in equation is

2MnO4 (-) (aq) + Br(-)(aq) + H2O(l)---> 2MnO2 + 2OH(-) + BrO3(-)

Here, question statement states

* "Parmanganate ion reacts with bromide ion in basic medium to give MnO2 and bromate ion" *

please check,

Mvs Saketh - 6 years, 4 months ago

Log in to reply

@Mvs Saketh In whatever medium you are doing a reaction of permanganate you will always have moles of acid being consumed.

Just compare this :

MnO4(-) + 8H(+) + 5e- ------> Mn+2 + 4H2O can be rewritten as :

MnO4(-) + 4H2O + 5e- ------> Mn+2 + 8OH- (In acidic medium)

Both essentialy mean the same thing. One may argue that rewriting the reaction may change the meaning of the reaction(that is mechanism of the reaction) but since we don't know the mechanism we can write it in any way.

In slightly basic or neutral medium :

MnO4(-) + 2H2O + 3e- ----> MnO2 + 4OH(-)

In strongly basic medium :

MnO4(-) + e- ---------> MnO4(2-)

The just above reaction is preferred in strongly basic medium since it don't spit out any OH- in the reaction.

Similarly in acidic medium the reaction is favoured since it spits out many OH(-)

Hence in basic medium it is not neccasary that it must consume OH- , it can spit out OH(-) as well.

Also I think it just customary to balance reaction with H+ and H2O in acidic medium and OH- and H2O in basic medium.

Also I think Inorganic chemistry is quite easy one , The only subject that give You suerty to get maximum score if one study it seriously .

Last Year I also make mistake of not studing Inorg. chem. , which Pulls me down , It is not Bravery To Loose 40-45 Marks in just 15 Minutes in Mains and similarly for advances (in absloute Terms) Just because of our careless attitude toward's Inorg. , So please Bro Study It , It will Benefit you.
And I Know all of your friends are also Telling Same Line that inorg. is so cruel , But all of you are making Huge mistake of your Life , So Please Bro Don't be So careless , and Please Study Inorganic By Heart .

It may sound Odd But Infact I tell You that I studied Inorganic in Conceptwise , It is really very Understandable subject if You Try to understand it . I agreed that some things we must have to learn and we don't have option , but Stiill This Year I Learn only few things and understand rest things by brain . Since I just focus on syllabus and Rest things are bullshit .

So please study it . Best of luck Bro ! Have faith in yourself You will rock It :)

And Bro do you know any Practice Question Papers books for Mains Stuff , so that we dvelope exam temprament . @Karan Siwach

If Everything is going well , I think I will get 75% -80% , In Mains , as I guess from my current performance's . And Really JEE MAINS Paper Has don't need concepts and deep understandig of subject's , It only Needs , Practice and Practice and and Practice , Means we have to just develope that speed only, So I think That it depend's on ur mental stage at that day of exam , If our frequency is Matched with the Paper then as You Know Resonance will Suerly occur :) So I'am just Trying to practice !

Also My experience Say's That for JEE advance , One Need to know application of our theoritical knowledge , But This Gives you only Surety to get rank whithin 2500-2000 But after that It also Only game of Practice , In My opeinion within 1000 Rankers are Only have Really good aptitude Level in absolute terms , but after that bunch of thousand have almost same aptitude level , So for Advance I will Just focus on Practice after Mains and Hoping for Best :)

Karan Shekhawat - 6 years, 4 months ago

I don't think us should worry about inorganic..just prepare it well for ur boards...even though weightage is less...that will surely help u..

Shweta Salelkar - 6 years, 4 months ago

I'm expecting a score in 180 s mainly because my phy is weak...since mains is more about practice where should I do it from...is hc verma the best?

Shweta Salelkar - 6 years, 4 months ago

As you have said 'best', I won't comment anything about it. But yes, as it has lot of questions, it might help in increasing speed which matters the most in Mains. For Advanced, you might like to have Irodov or MCQ by Deb Mukherjee.

Well 'JEE MAINS ' is exam which test Your Endurance , Speed , Ability to avoid Silly Mistakes (Say Accuracy) mainly . It Doesn't Test an Very Sharp and sharp student's and an Intelligent Student (obeviously all are different Things) distinctly .

So From Now I just Buy a good watch ( LoL :) ) , So that To I used To Time and It's constrained's . And It is difficult To Predict The Marks for JEE MAINS beacause You already Know By Last Year Experience That all Prediction's are may not True , because it depends on Exam Temprament at that Day , which Play's Major Role.

But Still as of now , I'am Predicting Maths=110+ , Phyiscs=100+ , Chemistry=No Predictions . I did not able to Predicting for chemistry because My Marks are Continuously Fluctuating In chemistry In My Tution Test's ,It Only Depends on Difficulty Level of Question .
But Still For Organic , I can Take Suerty to get 90% in Organic (If They did not Ask Question from Polymers ) :)

And ALso Best of Luck To You Also Bro !

Mvs Saketh - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Mvs Saketh yes It is ! So How You fill Your OMR in Mains Exam ? I fill In this way :

first 65 Minutes => attempt Physics => If It goes good Then I fill OMR , but If I did not doing as much as expectation Then I don't fill it at that Time .

Next 70 Minitues => attempt Maths =>Fill OMR .

Next 35 Minutes => attempts Luck Dependent Chemistry.

Next 2-3 miniutes=> fills Chemistry OMR and

Last 3-7 minites => Just Trying My Luck :)

Please Tell Yours Also . !!

Deepanshu Gupta - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Deepanshu Gupta First 1 hr... Maths, 15 more minutes if less questions are left, else remaining maths at the end. Then physics 50-55 min. Then chemistry in (remaining-20) min, 10 min for revising (this is must for 300+) and 10 min for omr.

Pranjal Jain - 6 years, 4 months ago

Log in to reply

@Pranjal Jain Yes ..my timings pretty much like urs..only I do chem before phy and I keep around 45 mins for phy..since I'm weak in it..chem is based on whether u know it or not(ie organic/inorganic).. If u don't know the and it won't matter whether u do it b4 or after..that's y I finish it before...and yes the 10 min rev is a must... 1 very imp point when ur filling ur omr is to check each ques no before darkening it..a friend of mine who was the first ranker skipped a ques while marking and because of that all the ans after that were wrong.

Shweta Salelkar - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Pranjal Jain First of all Best of luck to u Bro ! And Man ! Your chemistry ! 20 Minutes :) ! Cool ! Bro I just wanted to know that how are you in Combinatorics Sections ?

satvik pandey - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Deepanshu Gupta i used to (till now) fill it after the whole exam but i think its very risky, so instead i am filling OMR each time i turn the page, it may take some time but i think its better to get whatever u filled than the examiner snatching away an empty OMR , i take 45 mins on PHY, 70 mins or so in maths , and 50 mins on chem and then all OMR, in last 15 mins

@U Z You are My BBF (best Brilliant friend ) So Trust me You will thunder the Mains Exam .I know You have enormous potential . So Bro Just Be Confident ! Please Don't Think that You did not good at physics , You must have to faith in yourself. And Particularly In JEE MAINS the only thing which Let you score High is " your Confidence " . Since difficulty Level of Mains is not much difficult . Indeed It is very easy if You have High endurance power . I mean Don't be Panic if You are not getting answers of few question's because of calculation mistake or something else. From Now I suggest You To Practice Objective Question in comparison to subjective (For Mains)
Instead of Practice one question of iradov , it is good to solve 3 objective question's .

So have faith in you , and see you can burst the Mains exam , and for Advance You have 50 days after Mains. And 50 days we can changed world ! Also in IIT JEE , genrally physics is easy as compared to math and chemistry.

Best of Luck for Boards and Mains and Adavance ! Hoping for Best ! ! ¨\ddot\smile

@U Z Try to read HCV Theory. Its quite useful. I have read some topics from it like Alternating Current and Magnetism. As for practice, you may start with HCV itself, then you may move to DC Pandey. (For more challenging questions, I prefer Brilliant more than Irodov. Its not "conceptually tough", just that it adds calculus to physics problems.)

As for test practice, you may try previous 34 years problem (with time constraint). Start it chapterwise first and then take full syllabus test.

All the best to you too.

And Currently In My Last Test on Previous Sunday I got 110 in Maths and 97 in Physics and 53 in chemistry ! It was Too Bad in chemistry , But I will Come Back with good marks in chemistry Soon , when I complete My Theory. I have To study Inorganic and Physical chemistry and Polymers from Organic .

Deepanshu Gupta - 6 years, 4 months ago

Can you suggest some resources for organic chemistry.(appearing in jee-2015) I am comfortable at general organic chemistry. But i am not able to score properly in chapters like alcohols, ether ,carboxylic acid. Thanks in advance.!!

Mahimn Bhatt - 6 years, 4 months ago

Log in to reply

@Mahimn Bhatt Well I generally Used My Coaching Materials , beacuse It is suffecient , Since in , organic chem , If you all meachanism once (derived atleast by once or twice by own) then all organic question will be cake walk . But Still Sometimes I refer" Himanshu Pandey " . But as of Now I suggest You To do only authentic Book (Trusted Book) , And Personally I think That M.S chauhan is Not Good For JEE content from now , beacuse They contain Question which was Nither ask in Mains and niether ask in Advance . So use them carefully.
Instead doing question's first Make sure that You know some outlines of Mechanism of reaction , Since whole mechanism can't be remembered . Once you used to it then all things will be easy in JEE !

And Used Indian author books carefully , Because some question's don't have correct answer and Since we don't have time for wasting in such question's . So I prefered you to revise Your Tutorial sheet's first and then Try authentic book's only. And also Tell me what type of problems are you facing in alchlos and ether , carboxylic acid etc. ? so that May be I can help !

Deepanshu Gupta - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Deepanshu Gupta Thanks..... I would be great if you name some books which might be useful as of now. Mostly i get stuck in questions where cyclisation occurs in aldehydes and ketones.

Mahimn Bhatt - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Mahimn Bhatt As I said , I usally Don't use Books , I have only used Himanshu Pandey ( carefully ) , Since some questions are also incorrect in that , So I don't use it much ! And Since I have not solve any other Indian author Book , So It is not good to advise you any other book which is even not solved by me ! So I can only Prefer You Strength your Mech. part first ! And For theory forien author book's are best , But for questions , they contains quest. above JEE level , so from now , they are not as much as usefull .

And For Cyclisation Problems , Really I suggested you Himanshu Pandey , beacuse it conatins Really such good stuffs for JEE level ! Also These questions are important for JEE , since they usally use This concept ! So Practice Hard , Then you will surly Expertise in it ! Best of luck!

i believe if i properly remember (and comprehend where possible) inorganic chemistry, and improve my speed and , which i will because i dont think any one will leave a hole in their learning for JEE , i can get around 290-310, or hopefully more, presently i believe 100 up in physics and 95 or up in math and 80 up in chem, hope fully, i shall push all hundred up if i fully master inorganic chemistry which is what i am presently focusing on and hence i am not doing brilliant except rarely.

But i commit too many silly mistakes and hence i am worried , i need to be more present minded and careful, silly or rather stupid mistakes cost me too much, simple missing of signs or even forgetting a factor often causes problems and time delays, It has cost me much in life (academically) but i dont want to lose anything over such petty reasons again

also i am worried that last year JEE main was pretty easy, (ofcourse a proper analsys can be done only if exam is given and not for me to simply look at paper and comment, because it always seems simple when theres no time constraint) hence i expect this year it to be harder and probably comprised from more exotic topics and one must prepare completely leaving no hole, infact several questions of last year were simply exact copies of old 1980s IIT JEE objectives, one would know if he has done the chapterwise solutions ARIHANT IITJEE

Bro Personally I think You will Get 115+ in physics suerly , Beacuse It is cake walk for You , Ronak and deepanshu . Also , chemistry expectations are good , I'am also predicting 90+ in chemistry . Hey do you know any Practice Question Paper's book for Mains ?

@Karan Shekhawat well thanks but unfortunately every time i end up doing one or two or 3 sometimes even 4 silly mistakes surely, as Deepanshu said, its not just intellience, it is speed and calculative ness as well, but i am working on them, lets see,

and well no really, i think u should just buy those mathematics today and physics for you magazine and solve the practice papers, i dont need to buy any extra book as the pathfinder mocktests give me sufficient practice

also there is a good arihant book on that, though i dont have it , my tution maths sir often sets many papers from there, and they are real good (like above JEE main below JEE advanced type problem) though name is JEE main book,

Mvs Saketh - 6 years, 4 months ago

Yes I agree...in chem supposedly 14 ques were repeated...ur expecting a pretty high score..is that what u get at ur centre? When u say exotic topics what do u mean?

Shweta Salelkar - 6 years, 4 months ago

Log in to reply

@Shweta Salelkar I dont read at any centre, though i do attend tutions where JEE tests are taken, and also give mock exams in Pathfinder, marks fluctuate,

exotic topics mean parts of subject which people might think is too trivial to come, i cant specifically name them, because if i could , then it wont be exotic anymore because i am familiar with it,

and it is not high, if u see the scores of last years toppers, they are like 330 or 340 , imagine their accuracy, speed and clarity of mind, and skill, that is just awesome

@Prajwal Kavad Well, I slent a week with Bhavya at National Science Camp and I didn't realised that he is bookworm. It was only in train when he slept with a book in his hand. So I agree and disagree at the same time!

@Shweta Salelkar Even toppers are dumb sometimes! And that's you "Expectations" not "Real Marks". After all JEE isn't everything one can achieve in life!

Pranjal Jain - 6 years, 4 months ago

I am just trying to speed up myself by solving questions with stopwatch on. I am also trying to solve as much test papers as possible. Since I am from Kota, I don't have lack of study material. Though due to school practicals, my targets are being postponed which I really hate! (I make my time table for a week on Sunday so that I don't have to think up what should I do right now) Daily sleep of 8 hours is must. According to my current performance, I am expecting 280-310 in Mains. (Exact figure depends upon chemistry) I can expect 100+ in Maths, 90+ in Physics and 80+ in chemistry. That's quite obvious, inorganic sucks!

How are ppl who are answering boards and mains this year splitting their time?

Shweta Salelkar - 6 years, 4 months ago

Before a month, I started with 50% each and then increase 5% every week so that during boards you'll reach 100% for boards.
