For the benefit of those who are taking the JEE Advanced this weekend, what are some JEE test taking tips that you know of?
Should you start with your favorite topic?
Should you ever spend more than 2 minutes on a hard problem?
How important is it to answer as many questions as you can? When should you start guessing?
How do you avoid panicking during a 3 hour, 60-80 question test?
Any other advice?
Summary of tips:
1. Sleep early the night before, wake up well rested.
2. Eat a good breakfast. Have a light lunch. Drink water instead of sugared drinks.
3. Be calm, composed and relaxed. Dress in comfortable clothes.
4. Reach the venue (1 hour) early, do not rush.
5. Solve questions you know to build up confidence. If you can't solve the problem, move on and come back later.
6. Guess if you are not penalized.
7. Choose which hard problem you want to solve. You will likely not solve all of them. Better to spend 5 minutes getting 1 correct, then trying many problems without success.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

Best of luck which means to say that make it your day. On the day of the examination stay cool. Eat breakfast cereals of good quality. Have nails cut. Dress up in simple clothes. Believe me that no one is looking at you. Relax. Reach the examination hall at least an hour in advance. Do not load the brain with reading any further. If something comes to top of the mind try to send it away. If the ax has been sharpened well, it will cut wood easily. Believe in yourself. Stay composed. After taking your seat in the examination hall start recalling subjects one by one. So called jogging the brain. As the paper is being handed over to you, respectfully remember all the friends, teachers and well wishers who have been responsible for making you reach this far. Have confidence in yourself that you are meant to do well. And you will.
Yes I think one should start with his/her favorite subject . In this exam everyone is not going to solve all the questions... so if it is necessary one can spend more than 2 minutes on a hard problem . It is important to do as many questions as u can do correctly but the number of questions is not important it only matters how accurately u can solve a question.... In JEE Advanced there are some parts where there is no negative marking so I think we can apply guess work if we cannot solve them. JEE Advanced has two halves 1st half 9am -12pm then 2pm to 5pm ... We can't afford to panic it will ruin the exam ! . If the paper is tough then it is tough many students so we should keep ourselves calm and do what we can.
In this day we should also be concerned about what we eat. During the break time 12 30 to 1 30 we should try to eat some light food . Heavy food may cause lethargy. Always be confident on yourself don't lose hope at any moment ! Best of luck everyone !

Good point about eating light, since you don't want a food coma in the afternoon.
Why is JEE split into two halves? What happens in each half?

well, we must think about these psychological factors which affect our performance.. everyone has three subjects as: weak intermediate strong (favorite) if u start with weak, remember because it is advance, if you don't get the first few questions, you lost your confidence and then don't write the next subjects properly.. so, i suggest we must start with the middle one.. because, with that, you'll get some confidence and you will do it better. while writing exam, our concentration keeps decreasing.. so, the first subject to be attempted should be the intermediate one.. and then after that, pick up weak one, so that even your confidence level is high and concentration is also normal.. and then at last favorite one because your concentration level will be low by the time you reach there and you can solve those questions without thinking much about them.. and moreover, i prefer doing multiple choice before single correct..

1) Start with your favorite topic.. thats for sure!
2) Mark all the problems which don't seem alien to you and solve only those first.
3) You should spend more time on hard problems. 2 min is the average time and since you may leave few problems whcih look impossible even to start, you should use that time to solve these hard but solvable problems
4) How not to panic? I need good advice from others.. :)

You start panicking when you cant solve a question in a particular topic, say Chemistry...When that happens, just go back to Physics/Maths.
@Anish Puthuraya but then, people should do this only if they have the capacity of quickly changing their mind from one subject to another. lest, they would mix up both the subjects and will get confused.. so, a better option would be to attempt another type of questions in the same subject like, going from single correct to subjective integer..
(1) Do not carry any Notes/Textbooks to the center...Studying at the last moment doesnt help at all..You only succeed in realizing the parts that you left out, which only makes you more nervous.
(2) I prefer to start with Chemistry (since its my weakest topic, and also it is solved very quickly)...Once you finish this part quickly, you will gain confidence, since you have much more time left for the other parts...
Note: I am not sure whether the above point is correct...@Snehal Shekatkar said that he starts with his favourite topic....Anyone? @jatin yadav @Pranav Arora @Avineil Jain @Rohan Rao @Parth Thakkar @Vijay Raghavan

Well I would rather disagree on your 2nd point. You should never pick up your weakest part first. My experience says that you should tackle Physics first and then do Chem. Not to forget the time you devote to each section plays a vital role as well.

I have never thought much about which subject to start! I always start with physics, then chem and then maths.

I have never appeared for JEE. But I have appeared for other entrance exams like JEST ,TIFR entrance for Ph.D. and CSIR NET. My experience is that starting from favorite topic saves lot of time.
Sir, JEE Mains is a 3 hour 90 question test, not JEE Advanced. It depends on which institute is taking the exam. The total questions can vary from 78 questions in 3 hours to just 63 questions in 3 hours( last year).

Thanks for the clarification!
@Calvin Lin Well JEE Advanced is a two sitting test of 3 hours each. Each half has not less than 63 questions(as far as I have seen till date) split equally between Physics, Chemistry and Maths. It only makes sense to answer as many questions correctly in Physics(the subject that takes your rank higher), then Maths and finally Chemistry. To be honest if everything goes well this year it would have at least some type of questions that don't have negative marking...Well allthebest to the JEE Advanced takers.....
@Calvin Lin You'll post a new note this year?

That's a good idea :)

I have written a note on this recently. You can start there if you like :)
