Joke : Prove that 6 = 8.5

Main post link -> http://t.answers.com/answers/#!/entry/what-are-the-roman-numerals-six-when-converted-into-hinduarabic,51149b82d7fc7b56701f3786/2

What is 66 in English? It is six. But what about six in numerals? You might say : "Of course its 66!". Yes, but it is also 8.58.5 ! If you didn't believe me, write 8.58.5 in Roman numerals and you'll get SIX!

Thus, we get 6=8.56 = 8.5!

Note : For those who are not familiar to Roman Numerals, S=12=0.5,I=1,X=10S = \frac {1}{2} = 0.5, I = 1, X = 10, and so SIX=1010.5=8.5SIX = 10 - 1 - 0.5 = 8.5

See this for more details on fractions in Roman Numerals

For those who don't know why S=12=0.5,I=1,X=10SIX=8.5S = \frac {1}{2} = 0.5, I = 1, X = 10 \Rightarrow SIX = 8.5 :

Note that IV=4IV = 4, but V=5,I=1V = 5, I = 1, so IV=VI=4IV = V - I = 4, and so similarly SIX=XIS=8.5SIX = X - I - S = 8.5.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.
