Just an idea

I understand how hard this would be to mark, and I don't think I see it in the near future. But what if there was a problem set for full solutions only. Maybe it could be monthly?

It's just a thought, and I want to see what you guys think about it.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

That would probably be really fun. As you have pointed out it would be extremely labor intensive to grade/mark them. We have definitely considered the idea of throwing episodic judged competitions, that would kind of be like that format.

I think what you are getting at is that final numerical answers are the least interesting part of solving a problem and it would be cool to have some kind of event or problem set that puts exposition and reasoning at stake. Featured solutions already do that, but you want more. You are probably right and we are looking for formats of doing that which are fair, scalable, and fun. Evaluating featured solutions are already a huge time commitment for us, and at the moment we cannot devote more time to looking at more long form solutions.

Yea, I definitely understand the time commitment. Maybe sometime! Might I ask, how are people selected to submit solutions? Is it completely random?

Yes, people who enter the correct numeric answer are randomly chosen.
