Just for fun!!!

Is it really possible that 1=0??!!!

well, let's try-

let x=0

x^2=0.0=0

x^3=0.0.0=0

Now,

x^3-x^2=0-0=0

x^2(x-1)=0

Or,x-1=0

Or,x=1!!!

Can anyone explain how is it wrong??

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

till x^2(x-1) =0 everything is right but on next step there is mistake. if ab=0 , a or b is 0 .Here a=x^2,b=(x-1).We already have a=0 which results in (x-1) may or may not equal to zero.To make the equation correct,(x-1) not equal to zero

(x1)(x-1) is equal to 1-1, not 00. This is because you multiplied the x3x^3 factor to get 00, meaning that 101\ne0.

Michael Diao - 7 years, 4 months ago

When x3x2=x2(x1)x^3 - x^2 = x^2(x - 1) you divided by zero.
