Krishna's Messageboard

Hi. This is my official messageboard.

Few things about me:- I'm 15 y/o Indian from Tamil Nadu. I like math and I'm honoured to be a part of such a wonderful forum. I like languages and more particularly, the cognitive science behind them- Linguistics. I also love nature and most parts of biology.

I'd like to type less here . Over to the discussions! :D

  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

@A Former Brilliant Member Though I haven't read as much books as Mr.Krishna has...Yet my favourite book is Hall and Knight Higher Algebra .And the worst ones would probably be the CBSE or NCERT standard books which wades through the topics without going to the depth...What's your opinion?@Azhaghu Roopesh M

Anik Mandal - 6 years, 2 months ago

@Anik Mandal Hmm , I can't decide on any one as my fav book . It's just that I read specific topics from specific books .

For example :

  • Theory of Equations , Synthetic Division from Hall and Knight .

  • Multiple Integration from Paul's Online Notes and from I A Maron

  • And many such \dots

Btw , the Miscellaneous Questions from Class XI and XII NCERT TBs are good . (around Level 4 , I guess! )

Also , how did you fare in your Boards ? Good , I guess .

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 2 months ago

@A Former Brilliant Member Well, the miscellaneous questions in class-11 are not too advanced as level4's I guess. BTW, the integration part of class-12 ncert sucks! >:o Mind suggesting some good sources please

@Krishna Ar You might want to try this. That book contains some of the best Calc questions that I have solved (and those I have tried to solve) and some good topics .

You might also want to try Coord. Geo by SL Loney and Plane Trigonometry I and II by the same author .

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 2 months ago

@Anik Mandal Well, I feel I haven't touched upon any part of math too well to suggest you specific books . True that- NCERT books suck and so does the CBSE education system.

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 2 months ago

Wohoo! So, you have a message board as well now. That's interesting! As a biology guy here in a particularly math forum, was it your "own" choice to chose Biology over Math? And yeah, you are really a superman, I foresee you as a AIPMT, AIIMS, AFMC, NEET, and IIT qualifier. And I am serious here. How do you manage? Well, you like languages? Try making your own language, that's my advice. Because I do so quite often! BTW, what is your main research point?* *your future research point

I will add some more questions if I get any.

Kartik Sharma - 6 years, 2 months ago

Hahaha! I'm in splits. You're extolling me to a great, a really great extent. -_- I am no superman. Duh. BTW, I am a huge fan of your awesome calculus skills. If the soothsayer in me ain't wrong, your name should be there in the IMOTC list next year and in the IIT&BITS list the year following that. Though linguistics is my newfound passion, Languages and I go a long way back. I am what a few people call as a Grammar Nazi. I'd love to pursue research in Molecular biology. The question about managing, I'm sorry ; I have to revert it to you. 11 and 12 are two damn big years. I still have to develop time management skills (i badly lack them). Biology over math: Well, largely a mix of both my opinion and family opinion, rather should I say that the ideal of becoming a doctor was ingrained into my cerebral cortex by my mother right from the days when I was a toddler?

Ah, there you go, an answer good enough to last you for a cup of cappuccino ! :P

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 2 months ago

A cup of cappuccino, well that would be costly enough to me but yeah a glass of water is a better one. Well, what answer, really! Straight to it! Well, what you just said about me, is all a lie and for the world to know, he has an ability to throw the ball back into your park very well(yeah of course with the help of his linguistic skills, he can just win over a conversation by reflecting what you say in a very nice manner.

I hope I am not rude there but that's a really good quality, really good. I appreciate that. But just another question - how does success and achievements matter to you?

Kartik Sharma - 6 years, 2 months ago

@Kartik Sharma I haven't tasted real success (as defined by me). I also feel that I lack inner peace which makes me susceptible to panic attacks which in turn make me hyperventilate and lose sleep. :/ Life is a conundrum, truly.

Shivam Hinduja - 6 years, 2 months ago

RMO doesn't need much preparation If you're from Brilliant. I'm sure you'd know your Grade-10 math well and also know Inequalities (both alg and geom.). Do a bit of NT. Refresh your combinatorics. This would suffice. :)

Shivam Hinduja - 6 years, 2 months ago

What draws your interest in Linguistics? Are you a Chomsky fan?

Sanjeet Raria - 6 years, 2 months ago

To give you a basic example (without much ado)- let me take the case of word roots , ie: their etymological origin. Morsel means a small bit of something (food) in English, and in French it is Morceau! The word for sugar in Tamil as well as in Malayalam is Shakkarai/Chakkara. In Hindi it is Shakkar. In Sanskrit : Shakkarah .

The fact that English is a West germanic language and French is a Roman Language makes them distant , but their alphabet and word patterns are so similar!

Same with the latter case. Tamil is Dravidian, Hindi is Aryan, Sanskrit Proto Indo-European/Anglo Indian (origin debated). Despite so many differences, the myriad similarities one can draw between languages is mind-blowing.

It seems that you're interested in many things, and it's adventurous. I happen to have the privilege of being able to entertain and appreciate many forms of human endeavor. Now what i find scary about that is that one needs to be a fanatic 'time manager' to live a normal life with the ever going randomness of ideas. I find it very hard to cope up sometimes. BTW it was nice knowing that you can create a language!

@Sanjeet Raria Hi sir

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 2 months ago

@A Former Brilliant Member I've never thought about having one as apparently i think i'd not be able to answer every question due to my laziness. And i don't like ignoring curious kids. So maybe at a point in future when i'll be less busy in other stuffs. Thanks for asking Azhaghu.

Sanjeet Raria - 6 years, 2 months ago

@Sanjeet Raria Actually I'm the worst at time management. I can't imagine the next two years! (11&12)

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 2 months ago

Well, I didn't get interested in Linguistics by reading books. In fact, I haven't even read one. By linguistics, here I mean analysing patterns of syntax, word formation, phonological similarities and other intricate language based stuff. I actually got interested in this sphere of study after I qualified a problem solving test in linguistics. It was fun. We had to solve problems based on a corpus given. The corpus was from a totally unheard-of language. Eg:-Some random Afrikaans sub-dialect!. We had to use logic, deduction and reasoning to get to the answers. This inspired me to further research about Ling. I haven't really researched much, but I can happily say that I have done enough to know how to create a new language :P.

About the Chomsky part- I sure have heard of him, but I haven't read his books yet! I'm yet to formally learn computational linguistics (which I hope I can try to do now)

@Shabarish Ch SO how did you continue that part?

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 2 months ago

@Krishna Ar I didn't. I keep thinking that I have to start again, but somehow it escapes. Now, they'll be starting calculus in class..

Shabarish Ch - 6 years, 2 months ago

@Shabarish Ch Dude , you're level 4 in calculus!

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 2 months ago

@Krishna Ar Yeah, I studied the basics before I stopped. We were also taught basic calculus for physics. Physics, especially mechanics has a lot of calculus. I know how to differentiate a function and basic integrals, that's it... The level 4 came from doing the application based questions of calculus, word problems and the like.. Whenever I see a question requiring me to evaluate an integral for which I do not know the formula, I close the question and move on. This is what I want to stop by learning calculus for real..

Shabarish Ch - 6 years, 2 months ago

Anik Mandal - 6 years, 2 months ago

What's your favorite English Novel ? Your favorite Author ?

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 2 months ago

Good question. I have read a lot of children's classics in my childhood days. Almost all of them impressed me. So, I wouldnt be biased and choose one of them as my favorite. Instead, I prefer mythology (NOT myth-fiction) in contemporary style. My picks: RL Green (Greek&Egyptian), Ramesh Menon/Kamla S (Hindu-Indian) :)

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 2 months ago

Why not myth-fiction? Have you read "The Great Indian Novel" by Shashi Tharoor? Draws quite a bit from mythology and history. Or Rick Riordan for Greek/Roman/Egyptian myth-fiction, though his books are a bit childish.

Also have you read anything by contemporary Indian writers like Salman Rushdie, Amitav Ghosh, etc? Or any other books not mythological? TBH, I've read a bit too much of mythology and it doesn't really interest me anymore.

Siddhartha Srivastava - 6 years, 2 months ago

@Siddhartha Srivastava Forget about childish , I have read all of Ricks Mythological books .

  • Percy Jackson and the other Olympians

  • Heroes of Olympus

  • Kane Chronicles

  • and rest of his works from the 39 clues series \ddots

He is my favorite author though . Who's yours ?

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 2 months ago

@A Former Brilliant Member George Orwell by far. Rick Riordan's later books IMO especially the Heroes of Olympus became more "formulaic". I absolutely love 39 Clues though. I've got the entire series 3 and 4 to read. Probably in the Summer vacations. Have you read Amish Tripathi's "Shiva Series" or Ashwin Sanghi's?

Siddhartha Srivastava - 6 years, 2 months ago

@Siddhartha Srivastava Have you read the Cahills vs Vespers series ? I have yet to read some books of it .

Yes . I have read the Shiva Trilogy . For now , I think that's the best book series written by an Indian author .

As for Ashwin Sanghi , I still haven't read any book by him . Can you recommend some good books by him ?

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 2 months ago

@A Former Brilliant Member Yes I have read the Cahill's vs Vespers series. Really good but not as good as the first series.

As for Ashwin Sanghi, I personally haven't read his books but people consider his books to be an Indian version of Dan Brown.

Also try to read "Skeptical Patriot" by Sidin Vadukut. Its tries to check the various scientific claims made by various people. Really good Book. What book would you recommend?

Siddhartha Srivastava - 6 years, 2 months ago

@Siddhartha Srivastava Well , I mostly read fiction and mythological stuff and am personally a great fan of the Mystery . So I guess there aren't many people out there sharing my interests . But if you ask me , I'll suggest the following :

  • All the books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (I have read all )

  • The whole series of : The Gentleman Thief by Maurice LeBlanc

  • All the works of Agatha Christie

  • Many more mysteries \dots

Seriously I could write around 20 more books relating to the genres that I've mentioned above , but I don't think you'd like to read these types of books .

P.S. You may think what kind of a person I am or something like that but really , I am not into these Non-Fiction type , books by Indians (sorry about that , it's just that no Indian author writes the the types of books I like ) , and I don't like the works of Chetan Bhaghat .

Yes , you may hate me for that last part , but I personally feel that his works are nothing but nonsense .

Again sorry for such a long reply .

Also if you want some recommendations for any manga , feel free to ask me (but I doubt that you'll ask!)

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 2 months ago

@A Former Brilliant Member I've read all of Arthur Conan Doyle's work, but not much of Agatha Christie. I tried taking a few books from Patna library, but the books were so fragile and the pace of the novel so slow, I gave up.

I seriously recommend "Skeptical Patriot" though. Its an awesome book.

Also if you want some recommendations for any manga , feel free to ask me (but I doubt that you'll ask!)

Why wouldn't I ask? I always get confused between Anime and Manga, and haven't found a good place to start. Any suggestions.

Siddhartha Srivastava - 6 years, 2 months ago

@Siddhartha Srivastava Anime is the animated version of Manga , as simple as that :)

Well some of my favorite mangas are (in no particular order):

  • Naruto

  • Captain Tsubasa

  • Detective Conan (My Favorite one !!)

  • Death Note

  • Lots more :) \dots

Siddhartha Srivastava - 6 years, 2 months ago

@Siddhartha Srivastava Well , it wouldn't be an overstatement to say that I am what I am due to Mysteries and there has been a significant contribution to that by Detective(a.k.a Meitantei) Conan !

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 2 months ago

@Siddhartha Srivastava TBH, I don't read (in the sense that I read only sparingly) contemporary fiction. So, I definitely am against myth fiction. I feel that it totally damages the underlying beauty of mythology. Sometimes, you have to let the ancient things be the way they are. I have read few excerpts from Salman Rushdie . I haven't read A Ghosh, but I've read Arundhati Roy, Bibuthibhushan Bandopadhyay etc. By mythology in contemporary style and by emphasizing that it wasn't myth-fiction, I wanted to clearly draw a line between the original/factual base and the tampered /tinkered ones.

@Krishna Ar Oh. Sure. No problem. You should seriously move on to History though. Especially after 1947. How about classics? Have you read George Orwell?

Also, If you had to recommend a list of books to someone, which books would you recommend?

See MAT Paper Was Easy But The Main Thing Was Time Management. I Attempted 37-39 Problems And Got About 34-35 Correct.English Language Was Easy I Did 47 And Got 40 Correct . In SAT I Found Biology Tough(Because i haven't studied biology much),Physics And Chemistry Were Easy Except A Few. In Maths Some Questions From Mensuration Required Calculations So I Had To Leave Them Still I Did 17 in maths and got 16 correct . in social science history was average but some questions of reasoning were confusing.Gegraphy And Economics were Quite Easy But civics was somewhat tougher.Overall it was balanced.expecting 98-108/150

Prakhar Bindal - 6 years, 1 month ago

Wow. 108 is really high, Maybe youll be among the top-10 (As far as I 've heard, even if you avoided silly mistakes, crossing 100 is really tough in this paper) It wasn't balanced at all, maybe because you are really good, it was.

@Krishna Ar How Much Are You Scoring? (I Heard You Stood 1st in stage 1 in whole tamil nadu) thats awesome!! :)

Prakhar Bindal - 6 years, 1 month ago

@Prakhar Bindal The difficulty of the paper was extremely higher than previous two years. I didn't really expect a Talent search exam to be of this high level. Usually (without negative-earlier), cutoff would be around 90-95/150 or 145-50 /200 (when it was the easy peasy one for 8th standard), but with this years super hard math and tricky physics section, and not to forget, the incorrigibly lengthy MAT, I am hoping that the cutoff falls by a substantial amount. How I wish English was included too for marking! :P

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 1 month ago

@Krishna Ar I Too Agree That The Paper Was Tougher Than Last Year.

Prakhar Bindal - 6 years, 1 month ago

@Krishna Ar I am of the same opinion as you @Krishna Ar . I too wish if english was included. I badly wish for cutoff to be reduced substantially.

@Manish Dash I know right, but could you share an approximate score ? @Manish Dash

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 1 month ago

@Krishna Ar I think SAT-54, correct & 9 mistakes, MAT-25 & 2 mistakes.

That means, my score may be, 54-9/3 + 25 - 2/3 = 79 - 11/3 = 75.33

Manish Dash - 6 years, 1 month ago

@Manish Dash Well my score isn't too great :( I am quite ashamed of the heaps of silly mistakes I made. My score is mostly around 92-95. :/ (After negative) If I hadn't prepared for social, I wouldn't have crossed 65 (passing score ) LEL Last year, there was no cutoff, since only 773 people cleared MAT . This year I am hoping for divine intervention for the cutoff to drop or something like last year ( only 750-770 pass MAT) etc to happen. Fingers crossed. BTW Did you give that Dreamworld Exam this year also? (In which you topped) @Manish Dash

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 1 month ago

@Prakhar Bindal Well, no, I came 3rd. I messed up physics (got only 5 correct :'( ) and Math a bit. I scored decent in MAT ( Many couldnt even attempt 25). Overall I am expecting around 92.5-97.5(max) . I made a lot of damn silly mistakes (4-5 in MAT, around 7-8 in SAT), and also left some really easy questions and went for lengthy ones and not to mention lost 2.66 marks because of interchanging the shading pattern. I really don't want the cutoff to be high (you can clearly see why :P )

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 1 month ago

@Krishna Ar When I Saw Maths I Was Amazed. i was not expecting such type of problems(which are level 3-4 problems on brilliant) to appear in ntse . But thanks to brilliant i was able to solve them . Secondly Physics Was Tricky (Specially the waves, motion and light part). I Know you are excellent at biology so you must not have faced any problem but it attempted only 11 in bio and got 8 correct i am bad at biology . so in class 11 which stream have you taken?? i guess biology

Prakhar Bindal - 6 years, 1 month ago

@Prakhar Bindal I have taken Biology :) . In fact I am even more disappointed because I messed up that interchanging in Bio, I could have got 14/14 but getting 11.33 :(

Prakhar Bindal - 6 years, 1 month ago

@Krishna Ar How Much Did You Scored In MAT?(Just For Curiosity)

Prakhar Bindal - 6 years, 1 month ago

@Krishna Ar Well I Got 32 According to ALLEN Key. i have one doubt dont you think answer to question 17 Of MAT Should Be A?. Because there may be some teachers who are doctors

Prakhar Bindal - 6 years, 1 month ago

@Prakhar Bindal Well, AFAIK, doctors are really busy that most of them give up on their assistant professorship and I'm sure that they wouldn't put you to think so much in a paper that's already damn tough.

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 1 month ago

@Prakhar Bindal Thanks. Hope the cutoff is low

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 1 month ago

@Prakhar Bindal I don't think so. If you consider a previous problem from the NTSE, they put French and German in different boxes, but if some teachers can be doctors, why can't some words be common to German and French?

Satvik Golechha - 6 years, 1 month ago

I felt the exam was too tough for me. Moreover I had no coaching for NTSE LEVEL 1 and LEVEL 2 and also I did not get time to prepare for the exam as my classes for Class 11 had started from 23rd April and I had to manage with that.

Manish Dash - 6 years, 1 month ago

I could attempt 49 questions in English, 27 in MAT and 63 in SAT. Unfortunately for me, I knew a correct answer but marked it wrong on OMR in Social. I was extremely dejected and disappointed with my performance. I do not have any expectations to get scholarship . I had not expected such high level questions

Manish Dash - 6 years, 1 month ago

@Manish Dash @Krishna Ar As far as the keys are concerned, I believe I can grade my performance on the basis of the official key. But I do not know when it will be released.

Manish Dash - 6 years, 1 month ago

I too did not attend coaching. The main thing why Delhites dominate and score so high( A really nerdy girl has the highest score perhaps in All India i guess) is because of caoching and practice. Where do you attend currently

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 1 month ago

@Krishna Ar Currently I attend Sri Venkateshwara Classes in Vizag . It is purely based on IIT and does not give coaching for any other exam

@shubhendra singh How was NTSE stage-2? (I guess you must have qualified after reevaluation? )

How much are your friends scoring?

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 1 month ago

Unfortunately after the revaluation the cut-off was increased by 1 mark, so I still missed it by 1 mark. Most of my friends are scoring in 80's and 90's. There are a few who are expecting over 100(the toppers).

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 1 month ago

Hello dude! Long time no see. How's life? NTSE went fine. Expected marks 106 or 107. There are quite a few 90+ students, the lowest I know is 82, with around 4-5 students in the 80's. Rest everyone above 90. What about you and students from TN?

Ashu Dablo - 6 years, 1 month ago

Well, I am scoring around 92-93 only and people here are mostly scoring in the 70s and 80s with a few 90s. Your score is really very good and I guess I would have scored that much had I avoided those 8-10 really really silly mistakes. Haryanvites and Delhites have done really well this time
