KVPY 2016 interview
First of all congrats to all those who have been selected for the interview.Its indeed a great achievement as lot many appear in this prestigious exam .So we have abt 1-2 months left for the interview.So you guys can give suggestions on the interview like which subject to choose,questions related to that etc.I welcome suggestions from you all.From my school we have got 46 selections in which 32 are from SA and rest from sx.

So the kvpy interview is over.I am gonna share my experience.For me it was scheduled to be held at 9:00 am in NISER,Bhubaneswar. I reached there by 8:15.quite a far place.abt 22km from Bhubaneswar.It was adjacent to IIT,Bbsr.My interview started at 9:45 am after the completion of 2 students.The first one is a friend of mine(I don't know him much) who said after his that the interview board is quite friendly.that seemed a good gesture.So when I entered I just introduced my self,what I liked to do.etc.They asked what I had for breakfast and it was maggi for me.so they readily asked(chem) what chemical led to the controversy in maggi case.I didn't know.but anyways the person had himself told that this is not related to interview.so now of started.my topic was wave-particle duality,photoelectric effect and modern phy....somi was asked to explain photoelectric effect.on board which I did.then the physics prof asked me to split the work function into constituents.I did that it was binding energy+energy to remove that from the influence of all other interacting forces.then the mam asked on wave prop.then maths.I knew him as he is the director of institute of maths(where I had attended inmotcs in class 10,11)even he had felicitated me this yr for being 3rd in state in rmo.so he asked to prove that sum(j^99)j=1,2,3,4,5.was divisible by 5.I did that quite easily and could even generalise the case although it wasn't asked.the interview board seemed quite happy.I proceeded to factorise and proof the generalisation. And he didn't allow me to complete as he saw the first few steps and said "oh come on you can do after this quite easy" then something on relations.which I replied that I have not studied.and he said that it wasn't a big thing.I could do it anytime.then I was asked some conversions in organic although I didn't know them he didn't tell much and asked what I will do in future I said that I will do research (in mathematical aspect of physics) and they seemed quite impressed.and the next was a staple q(do you really want to join jee or do research)I genuinely replied research(as that's what I really wanna do).it came to an end and theybjust asked if I wanted anything to get clarified. I just asked what I can do to promote my interest as a student.The chem one replied that I was doing really well and I will do so.that made me feel quite ecstatic.and that was the end.later the director of niser(perhaps)wanted to meet my father.as he seemed to be quite happy with my perforomance.Later I went to canteen(some drinks)and returned.Believe me it was very big and great campus.and on way I even went to IIT bbsr.it is still under construction.nothing much but the field there is quite big.and it will look beautiful after some years.

No chance of top 10.I know a guy paean who is scoring as high in 90.and mine is 73.so its quite tough.but I expect a rank of within 100.BTW what's the highest in kvpy from yours state.I don't know sarthaks but his is mostly in 78-80.

Well according to your interview experience . you will easily get 80+ or even 90.
According to that if you equalise last year your rank will be in the range 25-50 (considering difficulty the same as last year).
I Got about 70 in test and 81 in interview ended with 59 .
My friend got 73 in test and 75 in interview ended with around 50.
Yeah top 10 is really difficult . one of my friend got 86 in test and 64 in interview lasty year to get air 14

Can you please help me? A particle of mass 'm' moves under a force given by F= -kx^n.Find time period of oscillations if spring constant is k. Here n is any odd integer.

Ha Ha it reminds me of my friend's interview last year . he was asked the time period for F = -kx^3 . IDK But the professor told him F = -Kx where K = kx^2
Hence time period = 2pi*sqrt(m/kx^2) i know its not logical at all but one of professors of the panel told my friend this :P :P

Ya its of the form 8x(o)^((1-n)/2)/w(n+1)int(sin@^\((2/n+1)d@)).with @ varying from 0−π/2 and w2=2k/m(n+1) Here the numbers 2/n+1)accompanying sin@ is the power that sin has been rairaised to.and the no1−n/2accompanying the x(o)term is a power .

Ya it will intact the amplitude is the x(o)term.Hey try putting .sin@=e(iy)−e(−iy)/2i.Most probably the binomially expanding yieldmsome thing but then that's not in closed form. No don't work it becomes tedious.
OK so it has a value of (√π)/2T\((n+3)/2(n+1)/T(n+2)/(n+1)). T is the gamma function
How did you do it?I tried doing it with normal integration and things are getting very tedious?

Well this kind of problem has been asked in jee but was somewhat easier . If i can reckon correctly it had something proportionality constant (alpha)

Well i did SHM arhive in september 2015 but i marked that question coz i was not able to do that at first shot thats why i remember otherwise there are 100's of problems in archive

But many trignometric integrals as well as integrals of the form (x)^a(1-x)^b can be solved under 1 minutes (and it has appeared as a previous jee question where normal method was very long).
Thus it is worth learning even from jee point of view i guess.

Yep many i had . one of my backlog is still there which i haven't overcame FLUID MECHANICS . In chemistry i mostly didn't got Organic of 11th which i improved in 12th . in maths combinatorics troubled me and it still sometimes coz its a kind of topic which you cant master completely .
I don't have it now,but it was in some PDF related to MIT's open course ware.Try googling it,I suppose its still on their site.
So what did you get I don't know beta functions much.

I have not solved it till end.You may directly use beta function's defination to evaluate that integral.Just look up on brilliant wikis.

Be confident , there main target is to check your confidence , they will try to just confuse you in your concepts itself and they will question you continuously , you just need to answer them with full confidence and correctness . And never answer those q which you don't know as wrong answers are not encouraged there and be upto the point , don't add extra waste things to your answer .

My score was low due to Bio, it was 66.5 , however in second stage they dont ask your scores , they are not interested in that.

my score in bio is just 11.total 72.75.did you chose any special topic of interest for it??and tell me how did you prepare?we have got mock interviews organised by our school.And they call scientists for that even.so even those who qualify the first stage by a small margin perform well in interview.any way I am also planning to go with phy.

Your score in 1st stage matters for selection , in second stage its obvious that u will get good score , I didnt do anything special for interview , just searched net for other people experiance.
My score in Bio was just around 6 :P
11 is big no in bio my score was 0.75😂

Nothing is difficult in this whole world ... stop thinking about that and let the studies keep going...
I Would not say difficult (class 12) just its a bit bigger than class 11 in terms of syllabus . but class 12 mostly has 55-60% weightage in JEE So you can understand its importance.

I was the last one to be interviewed so they asked me easy questions.
First they asked me C1+C2+C3+C4+....Cn prove this in two ways.
Then they asked a multinomial type question .
Then an easy physics question was asked.
Then some easy electrophilic addition question was asked.

Well the friction will change its direction may be I did some calc mistake but its like this initially it acts backward so time taken for w to become zero=(v/2R)*(2/5MR^2)/fR.=v/5ug.and for v to become zero its v/ug.So w becomes zero first then v=4v/5at that instant.Next friction supports rotation and opposes translation so 4v/5-ft/M=5ft/2M(t=8/35)OK then we needed to add with the initial.so that t=3/7..Oh I missed that......Got it thanks.
Maths was good.Chem seemed easy this time.Let's hope for best.Chill bro.I have exam tomorrow(chem practical)and I have bunked almost class(or absent).So I don't know even how do a simple salt analysis....(☺☺)And although I had done some in preparing for OCSc last yr I don't remember any.......

Hey spandan, one doubt in the question posted by aniswar , I solved it by iaor method.But then I tried solving by force torque method that is by drawing individual fbds but could not solve it.My doubt is what forces will act on the particle from ground frame?

Ya.I checked the key it's so incorrect....Maths in a matrix I got-4(Hyperbola)The physics is wrong as well.Esp the first 2 questions.....(Now as per the incorrect key I got (33+25+57).Don't know but in maths the coefficient of(term independent of x is given wrong)...And they also gave that meso compound one wrong.Seriously I hate fiitjee exams for their incorrect answer keys.....

@Spandan Senapati -- in that 65th question how to relate the rate of increase of temperature and speed of piston?? i tried something like PdV + VdP = nRdT. dV=Adx & dP=kdx/A since P=kx/A. and then divide both sides by dt. but then i am not getting that 3/8 in the answer.

A parallel plate capacitor is completely filled with a dielectric sheet of thickness d and relative permittivity k is placed on a horizontal tabletop. The lower plate is glued with the tabletop and the dielectric slab is glued with the lower plate. The plates are square of edge length l and mass of the upper plate is m. The plates are given a charge +q and -q, then the upper plate is shifted horizontally by a small distance x along one of its edges and set free. Find the period of oscillation of this plate. Thickness d of the dielectric is much smaller than the edge length l.

In the answer there is a factor of 8. I don't know how they got it. T=(8l/q)(e0kmlx/d)0.5 and pi is not there!!

Yes I know it's not gonna be a shy. It's gonna be a periodic motion with probably constant acceleration(I think) I will retry it.i didn't notice that the width of the dielectric is quite less. That's the error.
Try this way let an external agent displace the upper plate by a distance X then W(agent)+W(capacitor)=0 .Since for an isolated system in the absence of dissipation forces the energy remains conserved. Now since electric force is conservative W(capacitor)=−dU Where the second term represents the change in potential energy. Since no external potential is appliedU=Q2/2C.Now when we displace the plates by x say then U=L2ϵ/d2+x2.Now put that in the equation F=dU/dx. and terms of the order x2 can be neglected. This gives F=ψx. But we don't have any agent performing so the force applied by other charges on this is f=−F. So the plate exhibits SHM.Find T=2π/ω
I am sorry. It's incorrect. Didn't notice that the dielectric has thickness much smaller than the edge length....
It would be better with a diagram. But I don't see what thickness means here. Anyways we begin by noticing that when the plates of a capacitor are displaced then the capacitance of the system is given by Aϵ/d.where A is the projected common area.So Here A=L(L−x) . Now C=kL(L−x)/d. Force by the other charges on this plate is F=−dU/dx. U=Q2/2C.Note that the charge remains the same but σ changes..Using this you get ma=−kQ2d/2mϵL3. Now that we have acceleration as negative means it's gonna come back to its natural position, overshoot and head to an amplitude, return back. So t=4(2x/a) The constant 4 for in one complete cycle it covers4x distance.So this yieldst=8L/Q(mkϵLx/d) .I used d as the distance between the plates. God knows how it's the thickness. Lol. Got It? And the thing wrong in the previous solution was the expression for capacitance...

Its peanuts in front of AITS. The paper is Hell simple!. Last year the top scorer got more than 95% in mains .

The paper is very easy . Mathematics was just too simple . On checking last year's paper i found that i score 76/80 in math paper 2 and 81/88 in paper 1 .
Chem was as usual bad in paper 1 involving some pretty bad inorganic chemistry . as a result i got 62 in paper 1 .
Physics was quite easy . the reason for my not so good in physics (66 in paper 2 and 68 in paper 1 ) was that i hadn't done fluids at that point coz i missed classes of surface tension. so i left 2 problems in paper 2 and one in paper 1 of it .

Well I can touch the rim and yeah, in some street courts ,I can dunk where rim is low, also my school ring is very low so I can easily dunk there.
BTW u follow NBA?'coz this season there are some hell weird transactions.

Not near but I perform those lay up shots,free throws well.anything inside the d and its in the basket if in my hand.but our rings are quite high.so I can't dunk.even the best players of our team can't.

Well I have played state level basketball so yeah,I am familiar and well practiced with those fakes,crossovers,layups with added spices and 360° shot.

Also you play at which position?I am 5'10'' and rigid so I play usually center+shooting guard.

I am not one who is comfortable with maths all times.last year I also qualified for inmo and next was 31.!!although my rmo score this year was high(83) compared to the cutoff but inmo needs a craze for maths which I think I don't have.I am solving prev q papers and our inmo camp will start from 2 jan

Sorry to interupt but last year's AIITS 3 (class 11th one) Was horrible for us atleast. with a pretty bad pattern (10 Multi correct 10 integer) and -2 marking made it hell. for a top 50 rank only a score of 105 was needed of 210!

Ya this year was exactly the same.I am scoring 151 as per the answer key.fiitjee sometimes surprises students with such pattern.I had last encountered such in class 9 aiits-3.and I had just screwed up the paper.and no sorry this is an open forum and you can post freely anytime.
Can you tell what's the general scenario of students as they move from 11-12.as in our centre I used to see that a guy used to top I all exams.but in class 12 that guys best rank is 65(most probably).I can't just account for this.Is it that students do better in 12??

My Rank almost remained constant in class 11 as well as 12 . My average rank in class 11 was about 15-20 and in 12th it is about 20-25 . but yeah sometimes it happens . my one friend used to get top 10 ranks in aiits in class 11 but he is getting 300-400 rank dont know why although he is too good at PCM.
One of my other friend was getting 300 rank class 11 but now he is consistently getting in top 50 .
So it depends on you!
Pattern was same for us but paper was easy but then also I made manyy silly mistakes.
Gave it but really really sucked it.Made many unworthy mistakes :(

Its the weight that will provide+there can be friction as well.as its not slipping.so what I did was wrote the energy and since friction is static I differentiated it.something that we do in Lagrangian mechanics.this is irrelevant here.but you can try out this approach.static friction ensures that energy is conserved

I am reading about inversions in geometry coz they seem to be pretty good for solving problems involving a circle and some points.But i did not studied for inmo in the last week bcoz of some backlogs in jee-maths and physics and chem..

Grt!!for maths I don't do anything special.I was more focused on olympid maths in class 10 but now jee math is good.so I mainly do q from packages,some Olympiad problems related to jee.and class notes.

Here is my experience
My score in aptitude test wasn't that good (about 71) due to my poor performance in biology (6 or 7).
But my interview went quite good (i was give 81/100 in interview).
My interview was held at one of my dream places IIT,Delhi . It was a nice day and my interview was scheduled in the evening slot from 3 pm . Me and my mother reached there via Metro at 2:30 pm and my dad came there directly from his office. Then in three Cars (most probably they were Toyota Innova's :P) groups of scientists and professors came who were going to conduct the interviews. After completing all the formalities (submitting some forms and documents) i was told to wait till my name is called up. My name was third in the list. i still remember the person before me entered at 3:30 pm and he came out at about 4:25. From his face it seemed that he had a terrible experience .my father consoled me and told me you will have a great interview go ahead . My name was called i entered the room . it was a big room with lot of books and there was a large parabolic table and my chair was the vertex all the professors were seating around that table and lot of food (Sabzi , roti , dal , juices ,cold drinks) were kept there . it seemed that they were having lunch while taking the interview. i was asked to sit down and then a professor read out by self appraisal form. As i had written my favourite subject as maths quite naturally they started with it . i was directed towards a lady professor and she told me to get onto the board. she told me to draw a 8*8 chess board (i am not good at drawing :P) . She asked me some trivial problems number of squares , number of parallelograms , number of rectangles . i dont remember but in one of these problems i replied the answer as n^2(n+)^2/4 . she told me can you link it with some summation . i readily said it is the square of the sum of first n natural numbers . she told very good and she said isn't it sum of cubes of natural number i readily said yes .then she asked me to derive this . i explained her two ways by induction and other by taking difference. she told me good and then she stopped. then i was directed to the chemistry professor. there was a coca cola lying on the table and he asked me what does it mainly composes of . i told him carbonic acid and gaseous co2. he told good and asked me how can i determine the molarity of carbonic acid in that bottle . i readily replied titration . he said i give you a known amount of NaOH Draw the titration curve . i drew the conventional curve for strong base and weak acid . he told there is a error in it can you figure out?. after thinking i said no sir i cant figure out he told me you wont be able to detect end point as its black colored . can you make appropriate changes in the graph ?
i could not figure out and i told him that . he said no problem and then i was directed to biology mam.she asked me to sit down and take some juice and be relaxed . after 1 minute she asked me what have i studied in biology . i readily said cell theory as that was the only topic i studied for interview. she asked me some basic questions what is a cell , tissue , organalle's , name some organalle's and there functions. in explaining all these i said the word disease . she turned the topic to disease and asked me what is a disease name any three viral , bacterial disease . in the last i told here cholera (bacterial disease) then she asked me which bacterium causes cholera . i couldn't recall and i told her . my interview was over and they asked me whether i will go for iit or not i told not yet decided :P
i was happy but not very satisfied came out my dad told me that my interview lasted exactly 18 minutes .
i had snacks at the iit canteen (burger , pizza) etc and came back home .
just remain confident dont give wrong answers thats it

No inmo is quite tough.cutoffs will be high and they don't give much partials.let's hope for best.I am not so serious abt it.ya I am targeting ipho.quite early to say as I am exploring different fields.but I want to do research in the field of physics.as for jee I don't mainly polarise my attention to that.

Actually i am not preparing for INAO And might not give it too . It has indeed clashed with my board practicals which cant be neglected and postponed. I Might give INCHO+I feel its high time for me just work on my weak topics for JEE coz this time only 6 days are there between board exam end and JEE Mains .

I won't be the perfect one to advise.but in exams I don't become so happy even if I solve e toughest problem.I just move in with the hope of completing the entire paper(if not at least trying it full)and for avoiding silly mistakes you need to be very careful right from filling the omr to completing the exam.just after you solve a q read the opt. carefully and then only mark.1-2 silly mistakes will ocurr even with toppers but notmaking many distinguishes them.also it would be beneficial if you solve subjective q as then you can reach the final Sol.
I Am trying to work on them . might be increasing concentration will help

mine was Average. Organic was doable but That coordination compounds question and last deuterium one sucked .
And yeah i felt paper was lengthy for 3 hours .
I Had a bad time struggling with calculator . they gave pretty bad values in physical and i am not good at using a calculator

I think phy the last q does not have matching answers and for the variation of the excess pressure vs t that should be something like the first.although it remains constant after the bubble gets detached until then p falls as t^(1/3) in inverse ratio.and of the chemistry q.that has to be pk+-1.

Yeah even i too love subjective papers because we actually get time to think on questions(like in inmo,inpho,old iit etc) i hope iit again become subjective.But in MCQs we can't even afford thinking long on good questions :(

Nope i was pretty new to that . + i didn't had time . i knew that q will consume time and hence i solved those questions which i was confident of solving but were lengthy. but there was no negative marking in paragraph and hence i guessed B option in both the questions . luckily one of them was indeed B .

Good that you didn't waste time.it generally takes abt 10-15 mins even for someone who is involved in Olympiad maths.and if we give 10-15 mins in jee then surely will end up leaving easy ones.BTW when I was in 9 they had given an inmo q(3 bits) .hey I have posted some good phy q.why don't you give them a try.

yep in jee we need to be calculative . if that question would have consumed 10-15 minutes then i solved 3 Multi correct in that time which yielded me +12 but that paragraph would have yielded me +6 in which i scored +3 anyway :P
Even last year in our batch formation test, our Fiitjee gave us rmo and some inmo questions in the paper!

In a sense its both.its isothermal of course but since work done by the gas is zero its adiabatic.I didn't know much on this.you can search it.there are local variations in the pressure and the volume isn't well defined it being a fast process.

I got the marks of one of my seniors.currently in IIT Bombay,he had 74.25 in the aptitude and 86.33 in interview.total 77.27(air 8)in 2014.14 was difficult I guess.this yr biology stood the toughest.usually I scored abt 16-18(even once 22)but this yr couldn't do many despite of preparing well for it.

Mostly became overconfident(honestly).I could have managed a perfect score or so in the physics paper 2(but got only 34).Coz I just saw the q paper and was easily able to solve most of them straight away.I had even solved the entire paper..when I checked even I wasn't able to believe the mess I had done.Mistakes to such an extent that I marked a ans in the q paper but different in the answer sheet.Felt quite bad.Especially when my scoring subjects went bad there wasn't much I could expect with chem.So I am trying hard for getting within top 5 ranks in aiits 4.

I don't know.Its not quite difficult from them .Tse three people I told are ijso gold medalists and probably all three are going to grab the top three ranks in kvpy.
Well my rank is average . i could have done much better . My rank 32 score is 205/372. (74+43+88) In PCM . Messed up chem to a great extent . i need to focus on it

Chemistry archive is a must do thing. Its the best collection of problems for organic and inorganic . Maths archive is also a must do especially for calculus from where most of tough questions are asked

Nope not complete but almost done(but last few chapters like heat and sound left.)
This year i was studying for inmo maths and thus did not gave attention to jee maths.But in the end my fate was not With me and could not clear inmo.But i will now give attention to both jee maths and chemistry.

You know what earlier the same thing was with me.I was so engrossed in physics that i rarely followed jee chemistry.So even if my marks were quite close to the toppers in maths and phy chemistry would be quite less.But now Iam focussing on it as all three sub are imp.Esp chemistry as questions are straightforward and it depends on how much practise you have done.

Research....I will do it anyways.maybe after undergrad from an IIT(if qualify for a good one ☺☺)or iisc straight after 12th.And you can do research in an IIT even.Engineering physics is good although not preferred by top rankers(air 6 chose it this year).

I mainly focus on chemistry in aiits .As I feel that's my weak area and work beforehand.honestly speaking I don't study physics much for the exam as I have a regular practice with the subject and for maths go on to revise class notes.And if possible solve the archive.They pick a lot from these.

I was in a hurry when I solved the q.So let me try again..Use energy conservation for the entire system.Change in potential energy=-negative of the change in the internal energy.And that for an adiabatic process ∆U=∆(PV)/(y−1).So this will yield h=25/2=12.5cm.And hydrogen has Cv=(5/2)R
Although bit seemed somewhere misleading.If the expansions are adiabatic we must havePVy.And eventually if motion ceases we have pressure of gas=P(o)+mg/A.then volume can't be same........And its a light piston or does have some mass.......

Yeah my kvpy interview is over. They asked many general questions like how is glass different from other solids? What is the force that binds the protons in the nucleus? Why is ice less dense than water? How to use equation of continuity in gardening? As far as subjects are concerned they asked pretty simple questions like equation of a straight line and the one perpendicular to it. And Bernoulli's theorem and its applications. Hydrogen bonding. And some graphs from kinematics. Finally they asked what do you want to do in your future. I told that I haven't decided. And they told that it was an honest answer. And thats it!!

Ya I did that only 2 point charges(image)need to be placed inside the sphere.Then used symmetry and later some integration.Can you tell your and.That IPHO one was uite easy for that was grounded the potential would be zero so.The integrtiopn was quite simple.

my fone just starts charging so i can't upload :( i did like this.... using method of image , the whole charge induced can be seen as point charge .magnitude = d−Rq distance from center of sphere . dR2 solving finally i got .... −kd2−R2Rq2 i still don't understand y it's wrong :P n abt silly mistakes .... don't let ur mind roam here and there . just do what u r doing , i do a lot of silly mistakes too as while solving when i'm on 1st step my mind goes to last step already and tries to get the answer which results in a wrong first step :P uh too much typing /....slang english :P

No you need to place 2 image charges.Because the first charge as you did is correct −qr/d at a distanceR2/dfrom the centre but now we need to do 2 things 1)Maintain the electrical neutrality of he sphere and2)Make the spherical surface an equipotential so This could be done by placing another image charge qr/d at the centre.And another thing that is wrong is the interaction energy between the sphere and the point charge is what you have calculated perhaps.The question asks for mutual interaction energy between charges induced..And there is a mistake in calculation of the interaction energy between the sphere and point charge.....

Another thing that I must add is when you are calculating the interaction energy between the sphere and the point charge you place the image charge and calculate their interaction energy with the point charge right.But now this must be divided by 2.Because of space symmetry(I don't know the general proof although I had once verified that the statement is true).........I hope you got the mistakes in your solution...

ofcourse i get it .
It seem all of us are quite habitual to this habit of silly errors. i too lost many points in AITS Open test due to my negligence and of course my laziness. What happened was i did physics pretty good which i attempt first (score 48/62) then got into chem . clean bowled didn't knew many Multi corrects . due to this made a bubbling error (4 marks puff!) . Then switched to maths again did well (43/62) . then came to chem at last . i could have scored easily upto 32/62 but got only 15 due to my silly errors and my laziness (i didn't got a nice sleep last night and hence slept from 12 pm to 12:30 pm in paper 1) :P (paper was from 9:30 to 12:30) . but somehow i came over this sleepiness and managed to remain awake whole paper 2 :P

Even I knew the answer.Quite easy.either write energy or differentiate or take torques about instantaneous centre of rotation.Rather taking the torques about the ICOR is short.Another approach would be to draw the fbds.and then take torques about individuals centre of mass

Ya I s just saw and solved q 65.That's quite easy.Use conservation of energy for the entire system.We can find out the height h(but that would involve solving some hell weird exp) So they indirectly gave that h.And the other thing is simple the exp of the gas is adiabatic.Most of the qseem to be from energy conservation
For finding the height should we use (PV ^ γ) = constant ??

That's a upper bound that you can restrict the ration to be.But we need the best bounds.And that won't be possible for this process must be accompanied by some net heat exchange(Or else just a sort of ideal process.Violation of 2nd law).

And in systems as such its better to make use of energy conservation..And this question needs some more thinking.Let me give some hints(1-Eq of continuity 2)Co amputation of potential and kinetic energy of system(integrals).Force method is useful in systems where you are able to predict the behaviour of forces,their magnitudes etc.And here it will be quite apparent that analysing forces isn't quite easy....
You can refer the book by AP French(MIT Introductory Physics Course).

Coordinate geometry- too easy . definitely not of advanced level (especially conics straight lines and circles are too good but conics sucks in this book)

My friend told that his father had called kvpy office and they told its most probably to come out on 2nd April...Delay is a bit clear to me as in our interviews they had not collected the mark sheet.Some had to send them later(including me)...So abt a week or so to go....

It wasn't a sort of reshuffling for the CMP(batch-1)We had been told to appear only.Ours reshuffling is for the general batches and CMP(batch-2).And another one is on 2nd April.Isn't it?

For mains I had got full only in physics (phase 1 of 11th) and chemistry (11th class full test held in march last year) in 11th . although i got 115 maths in phase 3 of 11th. then in 12th in phase 4 got 120 in Maths finally :P .
In Advanced i have never got full in chem for obvious reasons :p . Most probably my highest score in chemistry advanced was like 84/100 in phase 5 :P
In Maths my highest score was 80/80 in phase 3 .
in physics i guess my highest is 76/80 in phase 3 .
In class 12th relatively papers became harder (especially phase tests) for preparing well for jee . i wont say about AITS . if someone scores even 30-35% in a subject in AITS he is well aware of all the concepts :p
I Guess this year's papers are coming harder .
Last year 3 people got 360/360 in reshuffling test. i didn't gave them.
The person who topped our centre got around 340 still his air was 20.
Similarly in advanced last year highest score was 198/210 and a friend got 160/210 and ended up with 100+ rank

As I said I got full score in physics mains(reshuffling class 11) and Advanced (70/70)in phase 1 and 115 abt 2 times.In Maths my highest is 111(phase 3).Chem not yet....

Cool Indigo took 2 hours while spice jet 2 hours 15 minutes from delhi .
Trains took a full day as due to fog in northern india trains were late by 12 hours :P

Fine.Mains Physics was good yes both Maths and Physics were tougher than previous ones.Chem answers were incorrect in Mains so I didn't check..Have the prev ones results been released.I visited the microsite but what's Blind School.

If that were to happen even then in symmetric distributions the net charge must be sigmaArea(for planar surface of course)If it induces charge On a certain surface then on any other it must be q and summing all these gives q.But unlike a spherical symmetry where the induction of charge would be symmetric the system given here might have different densities at diff point(if consider induction)and may be calculating the force becomes tedious by integration.So again physics is all assumptions that you make.For a sphere although using Image Charges is the most apparent way.

Not at all! I was expecting around 120-170 rank with my aptitude marks..... but the interview increased my marks by a huge amount
Yes he got 82.5 in aptitude and abt 77in interview.Another friend of mine got 77.5 in aptitude and 78 in interview.She is air-17.Although that still amazes me how she got such a nice rank.

Oh I solved that long ago.Nice problem.H ow did you solved? I used Fermat point.
Whenever it comes for finding minimum distance inside triangle go for Fermat point. It is the point from where sum of distances to the sides is minimum. And here construct triangle with sides (0,0);(0,5);(12,0) and then find Fermat point which is the point such that <APB = <......=120°. I had a PDF which provided an awesome proof of it.

Yes I too used the concept of Fermat point but rather than finding the point I used cosine rule and a little manipulation.

A point charge is placed inside a random cavity inside a conductor. Then the sum of the fields due to the point charge and the induced charges is zero for all the points outside the cavity.
I read Purcell. It is written that ' if we somehow remove the outer surface charge ' and then they proceed to prove the result which is fine, but how do you remove the outer surface charge in the first place?
If i assume on the contrary that the point charge and inner surface produce field inside a conductor, then this is not even a valid arrangement. We have to prove the fact. We are somehow assuming its true and then giving the proof.
Could you explain please??

You probably didn't get the statement right perhaps.It means that the outer part is shielded from the inner.Means that the field due to the induced charges(here it means charges induced in the under surface not on the outer ones)+point charge is zero outside the vicinity of the conductor.Like take a very simple ex a point charge is placed at the centre of a spherical conductor then -q would be induced on the inner one and +q(if neutral on the outer one).Then the field due to -q(on the inner surface) and +q(point charge ) is quite clear to be zero for outside points(r>R).A similar argument says that the inner part is shielded from the outer.It means that the field at (r<R) is independent of the charges induced on the outer surface.Got it?

The charge distribution inside the cavitiy occurs in such a manner that center of charge of induced charge coincides with our point charge. This happens so that electric field inside conductor is zero. The cavity along with our charge thus does not affect outside world directly. Got it?

Hey harsh aren't we going along two different lines.The one which I studied makes use of circulation theorem and you say centre of charge.And if it coincides then the mathematical argument must hold(the one with the integral as I said earlier).And for a general cavity the distribution being arbitrary we can't go on to evaluate the integral right.So circulation seems to be a cleaner argument.Isn't it?

I mainly did Archive for first level.
For second level i was doing previous year incho papers, old icho papers and preparatory problems.
For some special topics in organic chemistry like sulphur, silicon and phosphorous; radical and carbenes, heterocycles, Clayden is good.
After seeing the inorganic questions i was stunned. Maybe they expect us to guess new reactions based on our knowledge.!

Nice I too study clayden.Thats a great book.So you must have like known the key concepts beforehand...So inorganic was tough this year.I saw that deuterium q.The first few ones seemed essy .Involved a little of modern physics.But further oneones were comparatively difficult.

Yes...And that's why coq as a concept isn't quite mentioned even in best books.there has to be symmetry to a great extent coupled with mathematical exactness.
My Sir also gave this explanation but didnt explicitly prove it .!

I think that if the COQ was not coinciding then a PD may arise inside conductor which is bad thus they have to coincide. Is there any flaw in reasoning here ?
Hey it makes use of Circulation theorem.But the proof of shielding for an empty cavity is quite beautifully explained in Feynman's lectures..Its quite simple and uses some apparent symmetry of positive and negative charges.Try to read it or if you don't have I will try to explain.OK?

I could have seen the q but the link isn't active in my phone.You know Greens Theorem(Divergence theorem)??That's a important theorem in vector calculus.Given a function we can calculate the divergence through(say a given volume )and this must equal the change thought he surface bounding it.Mathematically the integral ∫\del.v(x,y,z)dV=S∫v.dA.Here the second part denote a surface integral.But when the function falls as 1/r2 something becomes fishy in terms of the integrals not being equal.For that we need Dirac delta function.Read any standard book on vector calculus and you will get it.

I tried with the hint given at the back which says
"Charges induced on the probe due to the electric field of the ball constitute an equivalent electric dipole. The field of this dipole is responsible to change the potential of the ball by an amount equal to potential created by the dipole at the center of the ball. Now consider interaction of this dipole with the electric field of the ball."
I considered that since the probe is very small the charge distribution on the ball is unaffected and i applied

Hey heating of Hydroxy acids does yield cyclic product but when the OH is at theα position to the carboxylic group you get a six membered ring. Here it's at β position you get an elimination product. So I guess the answer is Prop-2-en-oic acid. Thanks. I thought both halo form and Hoffmann bromide won't follow although adding H+ in the next step is an indication that halo form follows to yield a carboxylic group. Thanks

Ya I solved it.You get V=(kd+(1−k)t)√2b/(k2−1).I have added the solution for a completely filled capacitor but when thickness is given just replace C=C(eq),and those 2 capacitors are in series.

Nice...Congrats a lot.I don't know how much our school topper has but anyway of our hper result isn't good then its a bad omen for us....We will have to study in hper period that's the worst thing.Just to make clear we have 6 periods a week and our teacher doesn't come abt 5 times.He is very busy.....so its usually a bunk period for us.

Keshav Gupta.he topped in nsep.how did he get selected.I mean debaditya pramanik is going MIT this year as well but he has abt 7+ medals in int.olympiadsolympiads(with 3 APHO+2 IJSO+1 IAO+1 IPHO inclass 11)..On which basis did he get selected.From fiitjee bbsr we had one who went MIT last to last yr coz he had 2 IMO medals.

No.Last year I had been selected for OCSC in IJSO.Generally there are a lot of practicals involved in the can p so I had gone to Alle kota for abt 15 days..Dhyey and I lived in the same hostel is a nice guy.I need to appreciate his focus.He took the entire of class 9,focused and completed the syllabi of chemistry olympiad

It was good for me . the only problem i faced was speed. the paper was hell lengthy at our time (312 marks total) and each part of the matrix was a new question itself. 4 Matrix per subject was too much . rest paper was quite easy. highest score was 296/312 whereas i got close to 275 in that

Ya me too.I have to revise all three PCM of class 11th.
To start with the first problem.On Resistivity.It makes use of ohms law E=ρj.And so its evident that dV=ρj.dl.Here the second term is a dot product.Now choose 2 orthogonal set of directions.Here they are the directions in which ρ(min) and ρ(max) or (X axis)are oriented. Use Ohms law in this 2 directions.Its just a hint.Try this way you get something like δV=bV(ρ−σ)(sin2θ)/2l(ρ(sinθ)2+σ(cosθ)2).Note that here ρ and σ stand for maximum and minimum resistivity

then i found jnet in horizontal and jnet in vertical

how does the ρ) get cancelled? isnt it different for horizontal and vertical direction?
And to the other problem on dielectric I will just add a general approach.We shall again make use of Ohms law J=σE.Initial charges can be found out easily C=Aϵk/(k+1)d.Thus charge on plates of capacitor Q∗=CV and that on plates of dielectric is Q∗(1−1/k).Let's say we are asked the general equation of current at any time 't'.As usual let Q be charge on capacitor plates and q on dielectric(this won't be equal to Q(1−1/k) coz Resistance comes to play now.).So (2Q+q)/Aϵd=V.And from ohms law in dielectric J=−(dq/dt)/A.=σ(Q+q)/Aϵd.From the first eq express Qin teams of q and set it in the second eq.You get time constant of the circuit as τ=2ϵ/σ=2ρϵ.Now you can get what's being asked.Although the eq of current was nt necessary its just formal.

Thank you very much The mistake I did was that I took the charge to be q(1−1/k), and so I didn't understand what was going on.
Finally the electric field inside the dielectric is zero. So here do they behave like conductors?
The problem is we deal with ideal conductors and insulators in electrostatics and here conductors are resistors and resistors are insulators!!

Mine is Physical education.I had taken Biology in the initials of class-11 but I changed to physical edu.Taking PCMB is quite a strenuous job and when your target is IIT based there is no point in choosing biology.it just adds to pressure.

Ya sometimes they don't.I remember in aiits-2 on checking physics my marks were (-13/67.Yes minus thirteen)☺☺.After the results were out my marks were(62/67).So they do change in case there is a major fault or technical one.But in normal cases they dont care

I used energy method and found the acceleration of the block as (k/(m + M/3))x.
The force on the block is not kx even though we use the potential energy as 0.5* kx^2.
