Life @IITBombay

Hello Friends, its been a long time since I was last active at Brilliant. Actually it was before my JEE exam, and after that i just could not find enough time and inspiration to solve problems. However that inspiration is slowly starting to creep back in, and i am sure now I will be more active than I was before. I just want to tell you all that I am currently studying Energy Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay, the most prestigious and famous technical institute in India. Life here is completely different from how you would imagine it to be if you are an aspiring IITian. The level of intelligence of most of the students here is too damn high ! This leads to a lot of competition in academics. One tends to think that IIT Bombay will be all about acads and that students dont have a life. He could have been more wrong. Life@IITBombay is awesome! The talent of students just shocks you. One finds it difficult to understand how a student could be that good in academics and let's say dance or any other activity. I know a student who was in the top 30 all over India and he is a National Level Table Tennis player. Another friend is a very very good dancer and also rocks in academics. Be it Culturals or Tech or Sports or Social services, one always finds very talented people. It is true what they say " IIT Bombay changes you in ways you cannot imagine ! " . I just feel very lucky to be a part of this institution and be among the creme-dela-creme of students in India.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Sir this line - "Having a group of friends who are passionate in different activities which they excel in, can be a strong source of inspiration and motivation". Here it seems that you had a mesmerizing and interesting mathematical journey. I think you learned a lot from your friends circles and whenever you failed in a task they inspired and motivated you.

Can you please share some stories of your past experience and mathematical journey. It would be really very interesting to know.

@Calvin Lin What is Zoidberg?

Agnishom Chattopadhyay - 6 years, 7 months ago

@Agnishom Chattopadhyay Doctor John A. Zoidberg (often shortened to Zoidberg) is a fictional character in the television series Futurama. He is a Decapodian, a lobster-esque alien who works as the staff doctor for Planet Express, despite his woeful understanding of human physiology and allusions to his questionable credentials. His character parodies both doctors - for example, his woeful incompetence at human medicine makes him extremely poor despite his profession, and he's implied to be frequently homeless when not at work.

@Lokesh Agrawal Its a very subjective question frankly although just work hard. That's it!

Avineil Jain - 6 years, 7 months ago

The talent in IIT-ians is not because of the rigorous IIT-JEE entrance examination, but in spite of this. Remember physical chemistry, ugh. And nobody in the world is thinking of modifying the archaic syllabus with times. That is some legacy.

Rajen Kapur - 6 years, 7 months ago

Studying in IIT bombay is my dream. Congratulation @Avineil Jain . Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences. This note has inspired me.

satvik pandey - 6 years, 7 months ago

Is it better to take computer science in any iit? or to take any subject in iit bombay which has better placements??.. i m an jee aspirant for jee 2015....

Yash Shroff - 6 years, 7 months ago

That depends on one's perspective. Hence, it is better to evaluate what u want and go for it

Avineil Jain - 6 years, 7 months ago

Hey, Congrats @Avineil Jain

I wanted to ask that did you did coaching for IIT and did your friends in IIT did , because I am hearing a lot that it is practically impossible to cracking it without any coaching guidance.

Utkarsh Dwivedi - 6 years, 7 months ago

Yes me too tips for the last few months

U Z - 6 years, 7 months ago

For Physical chem, practice a lot of quality objective questions. Subjective Questions may be referred for concepts. For physics, practice Irodov(a must), also buy the solution manual coz without it its useless to solve problems. DC Pandey may be referred for some problems(subjective ones are really good) For maths, again practice a variety of questions.

Congrats on getting in...it is my dream to join iitb civil...I will be answering it this year...since mains are approaching..any tips for the last two months? Also how did you divide time between boards and jee?

Shweta Salelkar - 6 years, 4 months ago

Iitb civil! Well, best of luck for it! Just study hard, balance JEE along with boards, such that more portion of JEE is revised. Solve numericals that test concept so your concepts for boards are also revised . there is enough time between each exam in boards , just chill! And I am sure I will se you this year in IIT Bombay!

Thanks...you have been inspiring.. Also my phy is very weak compared to chem and maths..any idea where to do this last rev from? Is hc verma enough? I haven't done the star marking rev sums from my coaching books so..

Shweta Salelkar - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Shweta Salelkar Oh, so just do those sums, and ask your professors for some sums, which have insane concepts!

Avineil Jain - 6 years, 4 months ago

@Avineil Jain Sorry but I said I haven't done that..although it was the ideal soln to rev:p ..although I will ask my teacher..thanks for that.. Also one last question..I heard that in ur advn paper u had less ques on physical chem and conic sections...I know u can't predict jee papers but does this mean we might get more ques on these topics?

Shweta Salelkar - 6 years, 4 months ago

Avineil Jain - 6 years, 7 months ago
