Logical question

King and three prisoners King said: Everybody is wearing a hat, a hat is either black or white. The prisoners can see each other and can see other people's hat color, but can not see the color of his own hat. No speaking is allowed. King actually gave them wearing a black hat. And set the following rules: 1 The prisoners who saw two other people are white hat, can be released. (2) knows his black hat, can be released. After some time, A prisoner finds his hat is black and was released, how did he do so?

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Let's call the prisoners AA, BB and CC. Prisoner AA sees that prisoners BB and CC both wear a black hat. If prisonar AA would wear a white hat, then prisoner BB would know after some time that he wore a black hat, because if he would also wear a white hat, prisoner CC would be released, because he'd see two other white hats. But prisoner BB doesn't say anything, so prisoner AA knows that he doesn't wear a white hat but a black hat, so he is released. I hope that makes sense.
