Making a new "Discover people to follow"

I've talked to Peter Taylor about implementing a new "Discover people to follow" page, and he talked about it being changed "in the very near future". That was three weeks ago. The page has been the same for the three months that I've been on this site, and I think it would be good if it changed. Here's what it's at right now:

Every single one of these users were excellent... three months ago. Not to offend ANYBODY at all, once again these are all EXCELLENT users. But some people are hardly active, other's rarely post problems, still others hardly ever post problems. For example, Nicolae hasn't touched Brilliant in three and a half weeks (as of today). Ahaan hasn't posted a problem of his own in TWO MONTHS. Yan Yau has only posted five of his own problems. There are some really phenomenal users out there like Pi Han Goh, Sreejato Battacharya, and Zi Song Yeoh who all post tons of great problems, interact almost daily with other users, and post astounding solutions. They have an average of about 440 followers. But Brilliant can fix this! There are at least two ways to go about solving this. If you guys think of other ways, share! We can:

Recycle the "Discover people to follow" page. Turn it into a "See who's trending" page. Every day it would update, to see who has been the best couple of users that day, or just whoever's been uploading and solving and posting solutions to problems.
Keep the page, but change the people on it. Tell me what users you want to see for each category!

Again, this is not to offend ANYBODY! I will AGAIN STATE: all of the users that are currently on the page are great! But there are tons of people who work really hard and add a lot to the community who are going almost completely unrecognized. Reshare this note so that everybody can have their say!

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.

Comments

Brilliant already has a hard enough challenge in scoring and rating problem-solvers (work still under construction). But this matter takes it to a new level. On one hand, as the number of Brillaint users and problems expand, better filtering options are a must, and yet on the other hand, how to best determine who are the best contributors of problems? Reality says not everyone can continuously contribute, because, life.

It's going to be fun to see how Brilliant is going to meet this challenge. My gut feeling is that a lot of Brilliant's future success is going to depend on this, as "clutter" does degrade the quality of the Brilliant experience, without effective filtering tools.

Daniel Chiu is not actually that active recently, so I would change Harder Math a little bit more.

Yes I agree it should be modified. I think there should be two sections for physics too : Harder and Easier.

Hi Finn,

I am fond of Trevor's BOTW suggestion in the other thread, as a routine for preventing the staleness. In the short term we can swap some fresh face into the "Discover People to Follow" page. Long term, static pages are never good and a trending people on Brilliant is a likely feature of the future.

Congratulations to the people who made it! Brilliant just rewrote the page, and put in some new users! I hope they all continue to produce excellent problems! Unfortunately, I didn't make it this time. :( Maybe next time.

@Finn Hulse I think you should now post a "part 2" of this note. The discover page is old again, I also vote for a dynamic page like "who's trending"
