It is amazing how much of mathematics encompasses all the other fields of study. It is often said that a "[Topic] for mathematician" book will be an extremely slim volumn, since they already know the intimate details of the theory.

For example, the basics of econometrics (and saber metrics, for those baseball stat fans) is essentially just linear algebra, and having a firm understanding of linear algebra will assist you through the theory.

It is also surprising how applications of math comes up all over. Number Theory had previously been thought of as an exciting excursion in recreational mathematics, till the internet needed security encryption. Less well known, is that complex numbers are extremely important in the physics of fluids, and hence the engineering of air-conditioners :)

i am most excited by the way in which mathematics is used to understand behavior of people. The collection lots of data and application of modern mathematical, statistical, and computer science methods have led to nate silver being on tv, the netflix algorithm, and your facebook news feed.

i'm excited to live in a world where mathematics-driven technology can help me figure out why people act so crazy in groups :)

I am told Fourier Transforms is the most used mathematics in this electronic age. Is that true?

It depends on what you mean by the most used mathematics. Arguably 1+1=2 1 + 1 = 2 will be used more often than Fourier Transforms.

Fourier Transform has a lot of applications, especially in Physics and Engineering (and Mathematics of course). It allows us to understand an incoming signal (wave) as a sum of several frequencies, which allows us to do basic error checking. Fourier Transform is also used in Quantum Mechanics, to calculate the probabilities of momenta.
