Need help with this Python script.

Hello.

Firstly, this is the situation:

On 8th of October this year, we gave the Regional Mathematics Olympiad. Now, we have the results but only individually, i.e., I can only see my own result. That’s because the result system is this way – We have to enter our roll no. and then our birth date. We have the Roll no.s of all the students because the HBCSE, which conducted the exam, put up a pdf file on the net under the topic of Center Allotment. It has the roll no.s, and names of the students and their center code. But, we don’t have the birth dates. Recently, I met a certain someone on the net who created a program using python such that if we put the student’s roll no. and then the birth year ( By guessing ), it will make a trial and error attempt at the birthday of the student and fetch results. However, it has the following disadvantages: 1. Only one roll no. can be checked at once. 2. It will close automatically if it does not find the match in the specified year.

But, there is another person on the same site who modified the scripts in such a way that the program would automatically pick up a roll no. from the pdf ( or some converted file called CSV as mentioned by him), search for match from 1998 till the year the student was actually born in and after finding the match, save the result and pickup the next roll no. and continue the search until all the roll no.s from the region ( from the list ) are done. He did not tell the procedure, nor is he telling now ( I don't know why ). He only said something about automating from python. Can someone help me with this? I will give the files of the program if needed ( Which will obviously be because I don't know a thing about programming, so I myself cannot alter the script ).

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

I'd recommend you to learn programming. Wouldn't that be a nicer idea?

I could have learned and I want to learn programming but I just am not able to create time for extra studies. JEE preparation takes most of my time.

I will give the files of the program if needed

You already have the program?
