Never Seen These Problems Before?

 Update: This discussion is now closed.  \color{#D61F06} { \text{ Update: This discussion is now closed. } }

You may join the first set Polynomials Sprint. Have fun!

I know that for most of the Level 2's and 3's, the problems on Brilliant represent a different type of problems from what you would normally see (especially in school). To ease the transition, I am considering working through (selected chapters in) Arthur Engel’s Problem Solving Strategies.

How this will work \text{How this will work} - We will work through 1 chapter every 2 weeks, organized around a set that I will share.
- You would start by spending 1-2 hours to read through the chapter (selected pages) in the book.
- I will add relevant problems / notes every 2-3 days to the set.
- You will keep a record (aka a note) of what you have learnt. (These notes will be compiled into a set so that others can also learn from you.)

Expectations \text{Expectations} - Have access to the book Problem Solving Strategies.
- Commit to spending 5 hours every week (spread out over the week).
- Check in at least once every 2 days.
- Make at least 1 comment (on post or solution) during the 2 week period.
- Do not be afraid to clarify your doubts, as everyone has similar questions.

If you would be willing to commit to this, please upvote my "I'm interested!" comment. If there is strong interest, I will set this up for Summer.

If there are any Level 4 or 5’s that would like to act as mentors, please reply to my “mentor” comment. You will help out by providing guidance, posting similar problems, responding to queries, etc.

Note: In the interest of keeping this discussion clean, I'd be clearing out less relevant comments.

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

@Calvin Lin - Wow!!!!!! Awesome! Please, I would love to be a learner, even though I am in level 4 and 5. This being said, because I am really bad at geometry. Could you kindly tell me as to what topics would be covered? Would all the 14-15 chapters be covered? Also, kindly post another note reminding us of the date on which this will start. I'm ready :) . Also, I would want a small clarification too. Here, summer is already over. But you say it would span the summer, so it would be nice if you could post the date/time too. Thx! :)

Krishna Ar - 7 years ago

No definite plans have been made. I'm gauging interest first, before deciding what to cover, and over which time period. More information will be released as I make my decisions.

We won't be covering all 14-15 chapters. I'd likely start with polynomials within the next week, and work on Algebra topics. We might move to Combinatorics if there is time. We likely will not get to Geometry or Number Theory.

Calvin Lin Staff - 7 years ago

@Krishna Ar Yeah, me too. But I think I'll try to attend as both students and also mentors if I can help them. I still need to take some courses of the topics I haven't learned about yet, especially I need to take some algebra and some revision for geometry. Even I'm good at combinatorics and number theory, I still see some topics I haven't learned about. My school's started 3 weeks ago, but I'll try my best to study and take some courses with everyone. :3

wow that great.............. I am really looking forward to it.As i would to improve myself in some topics in mathematics which i am not good at all thanks calvin lin .

Saurav Sharma - 6 years, 11 months ago

For Level 4/5's, "I'm interested in being a mentor". Please reply to this comment so that I have a record. Include what you would like to do.

(Don't just upvote this comment, as I won't be able to easily track you down.)

Calvin Lin Staff - 7 years ago

I'd love to be a mentor!

PS: I have experience :)

Mursalin Habib - 7 years ago

I'd like being a mentor for geometry and inequalities (yay I second this) but there might be some weeks when I need to go overseas for competition.

Anqi Li - 7 years ago

I would love to help too.

Sudeep Salgia - 7 years ago

I would love to help! Especially in Combinatorics.

Shaan Vaidya - 7 years ago

Can you tell some methods by which one can improve in Combinatorics?

A Former Brilliant Member - 6 years, 12 months ago

I'm interested!

P.S: Is it okay if I am a bit inactive till this Monday?

Sreejato Bhattacharya - 6 years, 12 months ago

I'll do that. I mean partially since I'm already a student. :D

Finn Hulse - 7 years ago

yep i am also a student particularly i want to learn how to come up with ideas that will help you solve a problem, given a little time.

Mardokay Mosazghi - 7 years ago

Sounds great, and interesting. I am really interested and would like to become a mentor.

Pranshu Gaba - 7 years ago

I'm interested in being a mentor. Since half-yearlies have been over and done with, I can post some more problems.

Sharky Kesa - 7 years ago

why not /

Pranjal Prashant - 6 years, 12 months ago

Immensely interested in being a mentor!

Eddie The Head - 7 years ago

I'm interested in helping out.

Trevor B. - 7 years ago

I am one of the greatest fan of inequalities. I have all problems specifically of inequalities in this book. I would surely want to join as a mentor

Dinesh Chavan - 7 years ago

I could be a mentor also, but I really don't have a lot of time. I can commit, however, to log in on weekends and once or twice a week. :)

José Marín Guzmán - 7 years ago

I'm interested in being a mentor! Algebra and Combinatorics are my best subjects!

Nathan Ramesh - 7 years ago

"I' m interested in being a mentor. Jee , algebra, number theory

Vagish Jha - 7 years ago

I'm interested.

Jubayer Nirjhor - 7 years ago

After taking a look at the book I'll notify what i'll learn and what i'll mentor for.

EDIT Everything is mixed up. I might teach some and learn for others, count me in for both?

David Lee - 6 years, 12 months ago

Me too. I am also of the same type :) (y)

Krishna Ar - 6 years, 11 months ago

I'd love to be a mentor!

Ahaan Rungta - 6 years, 11 months ago

NOTE this book is actually much harder than i thought. I'll look a little more

David Lee - 6 years, 11 months ago

I'll see about it, because I don't know what topics should I mentor.

Samuraiwarm Tsunayoshi - 6 years, 11 months ago

I'm mainly level 4 on Brilliant, but occasionally there are stumpers I find in level 3. I could try to help as a mentor, but I'm still inexperienced.

Zong Zhang - 6 years, 11 months ago

I would like to be a mentor too

Aayush Mani - 7 years ago

Ah, I don't have the book so I can't sign up as a mentor ¨\ddot\frown

If you based it on something like CMMS (competition math for middle school) by Jason Batterson, then I could help.

Daniel Liu - 7 years ago

There might be online copies.

Sharky Kesa - 7 years ago

Why did the person delete the link to the pdf format of the book

Mardokay Mosazghi - 7 years ago

@Mardokay Mosazghi can u get the pdf link from history?

Sharky Kesa - 7 years ago

@Sharky Kesa yes I have it but as @Krishna Ar said that certain types of links are not allowed to be posted on Brilliant :/. And Calvin too deletes unnecessary comments!!!@Sharky Kesa

Mardokay Mosazghi - 7 years ago

@Mardokay Mosazghi Can you please mail me the links too???? Thank you in advance. : )

Vipin Kumar - 6 years, 11 months ago

@Mardokay Mosazghi could you email it to me?

Sharky Kesa - 6 years, 12 months ago

I'd like to be a mentor but I'm not that experienced... But I'd really love to!

John Ashley Capellan - 7 years ago

I would love to do this! I mean as a student, not a mentor. Things I need to work on that I need help me with:

  • Speed

  • Confidence

  • Less silly mistakes

  • Time saving

  • Strategies

  • Focus

  • Determination

:D

Finn Hulse - 7 years ago

Only, what if I don't have the book problem solving strategies? I am interested but I don't have the book:'(

Qin Qin Yang - 7 years ago

Well, you can download it from internet. I have did it too. Try to locate it

Dinesh Chavan - 6 years, 12 months ago

I like solving problems. I do not have any books. I am trying different sets to recollect my basic skills. provide short notes & typical brilliant problems.
