New Format for Problems?

Discuss here.

I myself think that it's a pretty cool change, but still lacking a few things.

I think that we should have the "viewed-attempted-solved" information back, as that told me how well and how hard/easy my problem is. Also, I think that after you write a solution, the button that says "write a solution" should turn to "see solutions".

What else do you guys think?

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Thanks for the feedback, Daniel! We're working on adding that information back; you should see it again tomorrow. Good catch with the button text; we'll fix that, too!

Question: you mentioned that as a matter of fact you were listening to all my complaints/tips. Did you hear what I had to say about the "Who to follow page"? I'll tag you in the email and you can see what you think.

Finn Hulse - 7 years ago

Yes. I really like the new format because it satisfied a lot of my previous complaints. It seems a little hard to get to the solutions though, I noticed. Also @Cece Yu and @Peter Taylor how do you tell if a problem has an official rating? To me it looks like all of them do...

We were listening :) Could you tell me more about why you find it hard to get to the solutions?

Looks like we are accidentally showing ratings for problems that don't have an official rating. We'll fix that soon.

Glad to hear somebody was listening! :D About the solution viewing, even when viewing my own problem the only two options on the little green sidebar are "Add a solution!" and "Saved to nn sets".

Also, it no longer displays the answer to already answered problems. So with problems that require a lot of computation or thinking backwards, it's a bit weird. Like if I'm trying to write a solution to a problem I haven't touched in weeks it's helpful to know what the answer is. :D

@Finn Hulse @Finn Hulse , most solutions contain answers..

@Shabarish Ch Yeah not if no solution has already been written.

@Finn Hulse Yes, you bring a valid point. @Cece Yu it would be nice if you could display the correct answer after solving the problem.

Daniel Liu - 7 years ago

Yeah, it does.

Sharky Kesa - 7 years ago

The new format isn't nice as it was before because many things are missing like haw many person tried ,solved, and viewed.

Though the UI is much cooler, I think it has become too compact. I liked the previous layout, I feel that writing/viewing solutions has become more difficult. You have to scroll for the MCQs, and three scrollers at a time is really confusing. Even the 'Try related problems' is taking too much space.

Siddharth G - 7 years ago

@Cece Yu , I am not able to upvote a solution. Is it just me or is that a glitch?

I think it is only you mine is working perfectley.

Mardokay Mosazghi - 7 years ago

I agree, the new format is pretty cool! But I feel the titles of the problems should be much larger as before. Also, I just tried a few rated problems and when I opened the problem tab, the problem level was displayed for a moment and then it disappeared! The problem rating and my own rating were also absent. I also just noticed that when you hover over a person' name, their statuses are also being shown which is a good feature!

Shaan Vaidya - 7 years ago

@Cece Yu : I can't find the correct answer for the problem anywhere in the new format. Can you change it so that the answer shows up?

Jon Haussmann - 7 years ago

Yes, we'll take care of that, Jon!

I see it now, thanks!

Jon Haussmann - 7 years ago

The problems don't show what my rating is. The earlier interface had a message below the answer text-box saying - Your rating in ........ is. I would request the staff to please show that as well.

Shabarish Ch - 7 years ago

I think I may have found a bug though...When I clicked on "Show solutions" after I used 2 tries,it showed me the solutions and the correct answer and when I went back to the question, I still had one try! This occurs on some questions only but it might be a serious bug.Hopefully the Brilliant staff can take a look at this.@Calvin Lin @Arron Kau @Cece Yu @Bradan Litzinger @David Mattingly

@Cece Yu : When I try to edit the solutions, the editing pane is unnecessarily big, can you please fix this?
