We get level ups if we do very good in that level as if we have learnt enough for that level. Then level down is meaningless. Someone's mathematical skills cannot drop in a week(since the level is kind of an indicator of a person's abilities). I think level ups should be made tougher and level downs should be stopped. There are numerous factors at play which would make me disagree with you. Note that level changes do not occur in a week, but take at least 2 weeks (and then some).
Firstly, the diagnostic quiz is not an accurate reflection of a student's ability, since it's only based on 4 problems done in a really short period of time. Having obtained more information after they complete the first problem set, we have to update any relevant level changes.
Secondly, if a student gets a significant proportion of problems wrong, then I believe that he needs to see easier problems to build his foundation.
Thirdly, the level up is slightly aggressive, since I'm sure you don't want to stay at level 2 for a year before being considered for promotion. To compensate for that, we have to acknowledge the (somewhat rare) times when a Level up was awarded wrongly, and the student is consistently unable to complete the problems at the higher level.
Fourthly, abilities do decrease over time, from lack of use. I've seen students forget what trigonometric functions are, just because they are introduced to exponential functions the next month. Also Mathletes do train for upcoming competitions, and take a break to rest and recuperate, just as Olympic athletes do. In this period, your abilities do rise and fall somewhat significantly.

I just joined Brilliant 2 days ago, and the diagnostic test placed me at Level 2 in Mechanics, Magnetism and Electricity. However, the very next day, it shows me at Level 1. According to what you said, it should take at least 2 weeks to upgrade or downgrade a Level. Why did this happen?

I stated that "Having obtained more information after they complete the first problem set, we have to update any relevant level changes." What this means is that your performance on the problem set indicated you would be more suited for Level 1.
This ties in with your other query about how well the diagnostic quiz can determine your level. In certain cases, you might have obtained a quiz question which allowed you to guess the answer correctly, instead of having the proper approach. As such, you will be placed in a higher rank than what is proper for you.

I looked at all the data in question and in this particular case, which was a bit of an exception, raising you back to level 2 is appropriate. It's fixed now and will take effect next week.

sir if anybody solves the complete problem set they are going up
I got leveled down a few weeks after the diagnostic. Correct me if I am wrong calvin, In my experience, within a level the problems get harder through a problem set. I was barely making it at the bottom of level four and then sucking at the rest. Basically, the top of level three pushes me but doesn't lose me and leveling down gave me more problems I can actually do. I felt a little ashamed but not really.
A student that is barely able to answer Level X's questions is better off working on Level X-1, where he can learn various concepts and techniques that would be applicable, instead of banging his head against the screen. There is overlap between the levels, and when you're demonstrated your capability, you will be promoted back up. I do not want to throw you off the deep end of the pool and let you fend for your survival, though neither do I want to leave you knee-deep in the wading pool.
@Jacob The difficulty of the problem tends to correlate with the points awarded. The problems that come later in the problem set are worth more points, and hence of a higher difficulty.

i was absent for two weeks .in the next week when i came only 15 minutes were remaining and i did first 3 problems of algebra and combinatorics.then i was demoted to level 3 next week

I will respond via email, since I'm not going to talk about your performance openly. In short, you were never absent for 1 entire week, and your level down occurred before the week of 12/17-12/23.
No leveling down is dumb, you could have an abnormally good week or an abnormally bad week that would mess you up. If it gets too hard, there's no reason you should be doing those problems because: "Doing okay in level 3 is better than doing bad in level 4"
I think leveling down due to problems which have incorrect answers should be fixed. I was demoted to level 4 in Brilliant Physics due to getting 3 problems wrong (2 of which the stored answer was incorrect and the actual answer matched mine, and the reason I know this is true is because later on the stored answer was changed) which was quite unfair and made me give up on Brilliant Physics because it didn't seem worth my time to do anymore.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We are sorry for the injustice of being falsely leveled down. There were several answer entry errors made over the course of the fall, and you had the misfortune of stumbling on a few of them. We had refunded your points, and those of all who unjustly missed the faulty questions, but were unaware that it did not trigger an automatic re-leveling. Our apologies. Your level has been re-instated.
I am in class VII. I am interested in problem solving. Presently, i have no programming exposure in computer science. Can you suggest me some basic books and approaches, so that I can start my journey from beginners stage.
