Olympiad Level 6

I understand that the Brilliant staff is extremely busy, thereby limiting the site's potential for expansion. However, adding 8 new problems per week for level 6 of either Olympiad topic cannot be too much of a burden, is it? User-submitted questions also alleviate the task of finding new problems. Staff, are there any plans for more challenging levels?

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

I support this idea, though I don't know how difficult producing a set of weekly level 6 questions would be (I'm not sure how many of the user-submitted questions are of level 6 difficulty, though maybe they reduce the time Brilliant staff have to spend on questions for other levels, which would free up time for level 6 ones).

Hi Taylor,

Sorry to get back to you so late. There are no concrete plans, but there are definitely ambitions of creating a level six of some kind some day. One of the challenges of doing so is that in order for level 5 to get harder it would have to either start on college topics, or involve problems without numerical answers. There is a whole lot of room for high school math to get significantly harder when you are no longer tethered to the numerical answer. Eventually we will experiment with some form of shared experience among those on Brilliant involving problems that are more proof based. I cannot offer you an estimate on when that would happen.

I haven't solved many level 5s but seems like the point spread (190-400) is double that of level 4 (100-185). That feels a bit much to me but does your data support splitting up the current level 5 into two or keeping it the way it is?

Hang in there!

Next week we will have problem banks that will not be on a weekly schedule that will hopefully allow you to never run out of problems (unless you solve a mountain of them).
