Olympiad Math

My country participated in the IMO for the first time earlier this year and we came out a respectable 100 out of 101 countries. Not because they were not smart enough, but they had no training. Where can I find materials for IMO preparation? I might be teaching in a high school soon

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Comments

Congrats! It's extremely exciting for new countries to join the IMO. It certainly takes time to build up a population of students that can help encourage each other to grow and learn. I would suggest exposing them to Brilliant, which would help them identify areas that they should work on to improve.

I suggest that you leverage on the Brilliant Wiki. Not only are there explanations of the techniques, but there are also interesting problems for them to work on, which will help them to better understand how to apply such approaches. You can start them on topics like Induction, AM-GM, Modular Arithmetic, Factors of an Integer, Pigeonhole Principle, etc.

For those who are familiar with these topics, they can explore further down the map, into techniques like Non-standard Induction, Cauchy Schwarz Inequality, Fermat's Method of Infinite Descent, Vieta Root Jumping, etc.

The community is actively contributing to these wikis, and they will become a powerful resource for those who would like to learn more.

All the best working with the students in your school! May they come to enjoy mathematics and appreciate its beauty.

Thanks a lot! I've been checking them out. They're quite detailed. I'll try to compile them all.

I personally have brought books from UKMT and AOPS (Art of problem solving) and I would say that they provide good resources (along-side internet resources).

@Curtis Clement Yes. I tried the AOPS website. It's really good

If possible, can u post your national olympiad paper ? I guess you have had only one national olympiad till now since your country is participating for the first time in IMO
