On Editing Problems

To the admins of this site,

Whenever I edit my problems, to fix the text, the original problem is not edited. It creates a new problem with the edited content instead.

It would be great if the original file is updated with the edits rather than producing more and more 'edited copies' of one problem.

  Easy Math Editor

This discussion board is a place to discuss our Daily Challenges and the math and science related to those challenges. Explanations are more than just a solution — they should explain the steps and thinking strategies that you used to obtain the solution. Comments should further the discussion of math and science.

When posting on Brilliant:

  • Use the emojis to react to an explanation, whether you're congratulating a job well done , or just really confused .
  • Ask specific questions about the challenge or the steps in somebody's explanation. Well-posed questions can add a lot to the discussion, but posting "I don't understand!" doesn't help anyone.
  • Try to contribute something new to the discussion, whether it is an extension, generalization or other idea related to the challenge.
  • Stay on topic — we're all here to learn more about math and science, not to hear about your favorite get-rich-quick scheme or current world events.

Okay. I think I mistook the share button for the edit button in my sets. I use that button more because it allows me to change the answers, difficulty level, tags etc.

Hm, I see the effects of what you say, namely that you have several duplicated questions.

Can you walk me through the series of steps that you take to produce this? That will help me debug it. Thanks!

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 11 months ago

That should not be the case. Can you give me examples?

Currently, the only time when we see multiple problems being created, is at the point of creation. This happens because the internet can be laggy, and multiple requests are sent.

Calvin Lin Staff - 6 years, 11 months ago

Well I think the main problem is not the share button (which created duplicates). Instead, the edit button should enable the user to edit not just the question, but also the answer, rating, tags etc.

I'm new to this site, so I am learning more about how it works every day.

To check, when were duplicates created? When you tried to reshare a set, or when you tried to reshare the problem?

You currently can request for a change in answers by reporting/disputing your question and stating the correct answer (preferably with a explanation). We are holding off on allowing members to directly edit the answer / rating / tags, to reduce abuses of the system (e.g. you don't want to see that all problems are Level 5, which would be meaningless).

I see. Sorry for the confusion.

I thought about the current approach of not allowing 'members to directly editing their answers'. I have come to the conclusion that this is the correct approach. It encourages peer review for truth.
